Extending warranty after 12 months

Bought a new Massey tractor just over a year ago, came with 1 years warranty with the option to extend up to 5 years at the end of the free year.

Got a quote to extend to 2 or 3 years as the tractor approached a year old and was quoted 90p per hour for to extend to 3000hr 2 year same for 3 year. Seemed fair but both options the price started from zero hours, not from the 1500 the tractor had done in the “free” warranty period.

Surely the is paying twice for something? Opinions?

No, you are paying for the extended period. You can, iirc, extend to five years, 5000 hours, whichever comes first. You will need to have the tractor serviced by the dealer, because this is on their terms, which you can always choose not to accept in advance.

Would you not expect to take the amount of hours the tractor has done in the first 12 months off?

I.e to extend to 5000 hours

5000 - 1500 ( that the tractor did in the first year) multiplied by the cost at 90p

I remember talking to a reputable tractor dealer... yes they are about!!….. at the market a couple of years ago and he said extended warranties are not worth the paper they are written on be it a toaster , tv, car or tractor as the manufacturer or insurance company that is doing it will find a way out of paying

AGCO underwrite their own warranties. Same terms as a new tractor warranty apart from the dealer servicing requirements. No excess charges apply.
Obviouly it does not cover wearing parts such as brake linings etc. The normal warranty exclusions apply in other words.

Up to the individual how they assess the financial risks.

My advice, every time you clock an hour, put £1 in your piggy bank, you can use this for any future repairs.
2nd advice, do your own servicing, unless you want to spend £500 plus for labour.(and that,s a small service) dropping oil out and unscrewing filters, even i can do that.(y)

What isnt a wearing part? everything in the engine and transmission thats moving is wearing. The cab glass does not wear, but is it covered when it shatters?

Just get a quote for the yearly service and factor that cost in, might be a bit more expensive as its a main dealer stamp.

Cab glass and tyres are excluded from new. Their warranty is covered by the manufacturers. No idea why. That's just the way it is.
What isn't a wearing part? These are parts that you expect to be within spec until very high hours. Parts that you do not expect to wear out of spec normally at those hours.

If you do not trust extended warranty and think it not worthwhile, just do not take it up or pay for it. Quite simple really. If your transmission sh1!s itself and causes £10k+ of repair cost within the warranty period, then you may be glad to have cover. On the other hand if you pay nearly £5k for it for five years and only have a claim worth £2k, you will have blown £3k. Assessing that risk and acting one way or another is the owner's prerogative.

I’m sorry but that’s just rubbish! I suggest you change who you speak to as it’s become rather tiresome

Got a quote for a MF as thinking of changing my 4 1/2 year old MF. Had that on a 5 year warranty. Quote just got is 3 years free and to make it upto 5 years £1825 extra.
Just had £3k spent on my guidance, all done under warranty.
Will try to get the 5 year in with the deal on the new one!

£1 per clock hour will not pay for the repairs on a MF tractor built after 2012 & there will be a lot of things to fix

My point is, this transmission blow up at 8000 hours, is it all down to a fault or is it wear... it must wear a little, how do they sort out the claim?

I don't need telling who I speak to... I am just repeating what someone said who has been in the machinery trade for 50 years, and I find it interesting what someone has to say who has been doing the same job for many years.. does your company give extended warranty??

Why wouldn’t you just get the 5year warranty thrown in as part of the deal?
These new tractors all cost daft money so who in there right mind gets 1 year warranty?

I have just remembered what someone else told me regarding warranty and I don't care if Robt thinks I am talking rubbish... a farmer had problems with his MF brakes and the tractor was still in warranty so he contacted his dealer and the job was done but the dealer told him he would have to pay because he was using big trailer with no brakes and would not be covered, the farmer contacted the manufacturer and was informed that the dealer had been paid for the job, so the dealer was trying to get paid twice!!! … I wonder how many times the dealer has tried that and got away with it

Fifty years, really? That would make said person 70+ which would be a stretch of imagination for most of us.
