I'm very lucky with my Hereford X cows. I've helped a few with calving ropes or by hand and they just stand or lay so I can help them. Probably would have done it by themselves but... better out than in.
Have learnt to keep my hands in my pockets but also learnt when to take them out! Same applies to sheeps.
Are your Herefords x friesan or holstein too?
What bull do you put them to ?

Well we’ve had our first live lamb this morning. So that’s a plus.
On the minus I’ve just had my 48 hour warning of a APHA inspection on Wednesday morning. Guess I’ll be in the office all day now!
Not had an APHA visit before but think there will be one soon after the vet f##ked up on inputing data on time after TB test and caused a load of inconvenience 😡,
Have they give you a list of what they require ?

TBH I’d rather have the APHA than the RPA from previous experience. Never had a problem with the RPA but the APHA seem more laid back and just focus on a small area rather than whole farm. Yes, they tell you what they want too see beforehand.

I'm not sure there is such a thing as a 'normal' sheep farmer...

Today’s feck ups. 🥵

5 week old lim bull calf on cow, started looking off last night. Jabbed with Zactran & Recocam. This morning scouring white water. Doses for scours, no improvement by 2pm. Sent for vet, 2litre of intravenous electrolytes. Rotavirus with pneumonia complications.
While she was here got her too look at a 4 month bucket reared blue heifer that had bloat this morning. I’d deflated her 3 times over the day, administered anti inflammatory and bicarbonate of soda dose. But she was blown up again tonight. So vet fitted a Red Devil. That brought her down! So we will see how many dead calves I have in the morning. Got too dose the scouring calf with electrolytes at midnight then at 6am, 12, 6pm and midnight again for next 3 days! All when I wanted too be double checking the paperwork for the inspection tomorrow. 😰😰 some days I really have had enough.

My ewes are on really good silage this year and it’s creating a problem I’ve never had before in houses ewes, they have to much milk, bloody teats bigger than dairy cows and full, i must have milked 20 litres out today, be worse problems to have I suppose.

Suffolk mules used too do that on us. Another reason they went. Tits bigger than some of the suckler cows!

We had a four week old shorthorn heifer stone cold dead yesterday morning, what is really annoying is we can see no reason why. Dad was even in the yard the night previous helping one to suckle and it was tearing around with the rest no problem.

Had a similar problem last year with ewes on rocket fuel haylage and too much cake. This year they're on meadow hay and have had very little cake. Milk supply good and no cow udders. Couldn't justify cake spend and went for better grass management. Hopefully I've learnt my lesson on overfeeding cake and using grass as a cheaper alternative.
