Does anybody know where you can get a fairly large amount of face masks? A few of the usual places are now out of stock or running low...

Surely there are some not on the way to the orient?

Screwfix, Toolstation, Homebase, B&Q etc, etc, etc...........

I've always wondered why we are not forced to wear them when visiting at Hospitals.

More chance of catching something from touching door handles, taps, phones etc.

You'd need to be intimately close to catch corona-lurgy by getting breathed on.
This is just so wrong, most of these virus's need to contaminate the air ways so the easiest way for them to enter is via breathing freshly sneezed droplets in. Once dry the virus is well on its way to death. Of course we cannot be 100% sure of a new virus but it is most likely it follows the pattern of colds and flu.
Sadly few people see the need to carry either tissues or handkerchiefs today and like to spread their diseases in the mistaken belief that they can give it away.
Hand washing is of course crucial but no where near as so for a disease like Norovirus a or bacteria which infect the digestive tract.
A mask will never be 100% effective as you cannot achieve a total seal with any standard mask and they cannot guarantee perfect filtration either.
However I would not fancy going on public transport or into crowds in China without one! The Japanese wear them nearly full time in the cities
The risk from handling doorknob ons is certainly one we should not ignore it is a shame more were not made of copper or silver plate, both of which are powerful germinicides

I understood that one of the main reasons for facemasks was so that you are reducing contact between your hands and your nose/mouth.

You are much less likely to bring hands and nose/mouth into contact if there is a face mask in between, thus reducing the chance of you transferring virus/bugs from a dirty surface and also you transferring the same from your mouth/nose to a surface. So as long as you wash your hands before eating/drinking then you are reducing risk.
