Family holiday during term time

As I read this thread and it's comments, I wonder was I wrong to take two eldest out of school on Wednesday for a road trip to North sheep, we had to leave at 1.30 so could get back for my afternoon milking shift. They learnt alsorts and few new words, but both said they had learnt a lot more than they would of at school. They were just hoping little sis did not tell any one at school .

I'm not sure that is true :scratchhead:. But I do get your point, same four walls in the same place doesn't do anyone any good imo

Currently on hols in Crete with our 6 month old. Days out haven't been very long and time lounging by pool/on beach haven't been many hours - but understandable with an infant.
Just time spent hanging in the room with him is great. Soon enough in the coming months I wont even see him awake in the evening.
What's the weather like, me and the mrs going to Crete next week.

Why not?
Far more educational than sand and sea
January is the only time i can get away easily, so skiing it is
What other activity can parents take part on equal terms with kids ?
yep, and what other holiday ensures you cant think about the home farm , cos there is no way you can think about work whilst hurtling down a mountain trying to avoid breaking your neck wether snowploughing or off piste and en famille adds an extra dimension away from the workplace which is often also home

Quality time spent with your kids is worth a lot more than a week lost at School
Used to get the drilli ng done and Rams put in.. then go off in the October half term, to Wales usually as it was better value place to go and that time of year was cheaper than peak season.

Still Timing could make heck of a difference though if you aint got a lot to spend with a young family.
They were happy days .

I took the family skiing this year for the first time with my sister and neice too.
Jan 16 for a week, it was fantastic
I usually spend all summer baling hay silage and straw so no chance to book anything

Probably not, its not just farmers that have busy lives. How's their attendance the rest of the time? Can they stand to miss a week? Can you not go away in winter?

Having said all that my sons missing 3 weeks soon (only year 2 though) to travel to the UK. School were no trouble saying he'll learn more travelling. If we were going to lie on a beach for 3 weeks I wouldn't do it though.

jesus holiday in winter would be bleak most places

we get time off every year there ok about it

Having worked for a lot of farmers and providing holiday cover for some in my self employed days, I'd say they are generally split into 2 groups.

Group 1 make time for holidays either by planning workload in advance or finding someone to cover their workload while they are away.

Group 2 don't really want to go away or think the farm is more important, so ensure their workload is such, that they always have an excuse, claiming that there's no one that could possibly do the work they do.

There's always a way if you really want to do it.
I do wonder whether schools clamping down on term time holidays has actually helped some farming families get away? The 'boss' says "they're going to tell me what to do are they, I'll show them" and then make time to go away to stick 2 fingers up to the school, when normally they wouldn't go.

oh yes you do , first time I ever went was a school trip 50 years ago only missed one year since

Agreed it is good fun, but is it worth compromising your offspring’s education? I’m personally glad that my parents encouraged me through school and didn’t take me out. It made me understand that education is very important, which encouraged me to maximise my potential and got me a great job. Holiday away from home is a luxury, not a necessity.

How many on here openly admit they missed out on their kids growing up?
Or are 6ft under?

I had plenty time with my parents whilst growing up, but at home for weekends, evenings etc. Time with family is essential, that’s definite, but it doesn’t need to be away and certainly not at the compromise of their education, to suit our work schedule. The kids want Daddy and Mummy, not flights and hotels.
