I wonder if anyone could help me or lead me in the right direction please? My husband and Son are really interested in wild living and my husband would really like to teach our son and his friend the value of the countryside, respecting it and living from it. I was wondering if it would be possible for them to possibly walk some farmland land and stay a few nights under the stars. They don't want to use a camping site just freestyle so they can make the most of the countryside. I was wondering if there is anyone who would be kind enough to allow this to happen for them please? Is this something anyone would consider please? They would obviously leave the area clean and tidy as this experience would be about respecting the area and leaving the countryside unspoilt. If there was river on the land that would be perfect so at least they might be able to catch something to eat. I look forward to any replies or help. Thanks Jo

Sorry you’re right. I didn’t think of that. We are in the Buckinghamshire area, but they are willing to travel anywhere in the country if there is someone who would help us.

You are talking about wild camping I.e. pitching a tent and not staying at places with facilities. You don't need to stay on someone's land. This is allowed on anywhere with open access, mountains, moorland etc. I'm sure there are plenty of sources that map out where is potentially available

I thought this was illegal unless it was in Dartmoor. Am I wrong? Very new to this so any help is appreciated

Definitely Dartmoor. It may become a little more foggy after that. Personally, I see no harm in pitching a tent and leaving before anybody even noticed that you were there. Obviously leaving no trace of your occupation. Maybe you are right to ask permission. Personally I would start with some long day walks and maybe you can identify a few nooks or see where others pitch tents.

I would have thought that would go without saying. Isn’t that the norm? If anyone helps us out that would be the first thing I would offer

I was surprised to find an isolated corner of my ffridd (upland enclosure) had obviously been occupied for some time last year. It was during the first lockdown.

Wild camping is technically illegal in England, Wales and N Ireland without the landowners explicit permission. Dartmoor has specific areas where it is permissible
