Farm Plastic

Problem is we are our own worst enemy sometimes
*Hypocrite alert*
Why don't we take plastic off of bales and roll up nicely so it's clean
Silage sheet is usually clean untill it is cut and thrown on the pit floor ,driven over to get the tyres then rolled or folded up
Then we moan when companies won't take dirty or mixed plastics
On my visits to Holland I only saw pristinely clean farm yards with no detritus and plastic blowing around
Many of us have a lot to learn
Great comment jimmer. Couldn't agree more. Many farms in the UK and their presentation to the world is a complete embarrassment to the industry. Sadly the majority of farmers don't see it and don't care. First impressions?
So chaps, cut some silage sheet this afternoon. Its covered in maize that the wind has blown from the face up ontop of the sheet. Its also covered in starling sh1t. Ive rolled it up as per usual and filed it in a old fertiliser bag. Its still minging dirty plastic tho

took some silage wrap to mole valley this year. you have to buy their big bin bags to put it in, £4 for 10, get 20-30 bales worth in each bag, then its free to dispose of, need to fill out waste transfer ticket, and register as a waste carrier to take it to the store.
will take Silage bale wrap, Silage sheets, Barrier sheets, Feed bags, only at Bridgwater, Cullompton, South Molton and Liskeard stores. bit of a pain, bagging it all up, but does save money.

How big are the bags ?

I put mine in 1/2 tonne cake bags , but Coastal Agri at Kenford have stopped taking it.

About the size of an average cooker but maybe slightly taller. I have just staesta doing the Mole Valley bag plastic recycling and it takes a little longer but is working well

Rolling sheet back is alright until it rains all night Saturday and you go out Sunday morning and all the sheet has come down and brought a load of tyres down with it and you spend an hour clearing them all back up
Roll it back under itself, then no water can sit in it!! I do that and then put a line of tyres along it and it doesn’t go to far and we’d be wonder than most up here!

Think it depends how steep the top of your pit is ? Ours is in a hillside and nothing will geek the green sheets from falling off the edge never mind the plastic, it's so much work on your own in crap weather I'm tempted to go all bales ! Or buy mats , I just hate green sheets , tyres touching would be less work but the birds would wreck the sheet without protection

a feeder I go to for cattle sealed his two pits with orange peel this year, nothing else, and there's no top waste and the cattle eat it all without sifting. Also he has a friend that doesn't sheet at all and reckons there is less top waste than sheeting although I haven't seen it.

Hope your tyres are better than mine . rolling back the sheet is what catches all the tyre wire, from the ancient tyres that are breaking down.

Putting it under would allow the bits of wire to get in the silage.

Sheets used twice here, once as top sheet then as side sheet.

Try to sift out the ropey ones when we put them on! If you use tyres wires are always going to be a risk

Use our silage sheets 3 times on our outdoor pit, new against the grass, last years new as a top sheet, then last years top sheet as side sheets.

got a letter today to say that mole valley are closing their farm plastic recycling scheme at the end of Feb, guess we will have to go back to paying to dispose of it.

Now Kennford have stopped...
I'm sending 2 dumpys full of wrap into one of the outfits still receiving (£15 plus vat/bag delivered).
That firm have indicated matters will soon be changing, so we're getting as up to date as possible.
(There was a backlog to clear on an off site, where it's been all to easy to throw it in a heap in an unused lean-to beside the heap.)
