Farm weighbridge

I want to put a weighbridge in, it will be used for weighing crops as they come in on tractor and trailer, and also HGV's.

I am looking at pit mounted as we are doing some yard alterations, so putting a pit in at the same time wouldn't be much extra work, or is surface mounted better.

Also what companies are people using?

Griffith elder. Our weighbridge was installed sometime in the 80s, original bridge, original frame and original weigh cells. It’s had 3 computer upgrades and their staff are always knowledgeable and helpful.

We put a new one in last summer. Parkerfarm were £5k less than Griffiths Elder. Metron's quote arrived after the new bridge was installed.

Our old bridge was pit mounted and forever going wrong. Gets straw / leaves / dust in, traps water.
New one is above ground.

Just out of curiosity, how much does an above ground one cost?

And, why do you have them? Yes I know it will tell you how much is in your grain stores but at the end of the day, the lorry will go over the merchants bridge and that is what you’ll be paid on .... or am I missing something?

I don't know the answer to your first question, but for the second one, you are relying on the end user being honest. There are a few tales of hauliers with pig farms tipping a tonne off before going onto the destination. You've only got their word that the weight is accurate. A neighbour of mine with a properly calibrated weighbridge reckoned he had at least one disputed weight each year and never in his favour. He always got his money back.

An above ground is going to be around £16k.

Reasons for us to have one is we buy a fair bit of forage off the field, by the tonne, but estimated on trailer loads, so I want to get that right. I also have no idea what my forage crops yield, so I want to have better control over that, I don't anticipate weighing every field, but might just pick a few each cut to get a representation. All straw comes in by the tonne on our own lorry and its a PITA trying to find a weighbridge, generally adding 30 mins to your driving time each load, and it also means I can't pop for a load later on as there are no weighbridges open after 5 around us.
I am also anticipating weighing everything I can, slurry, FYM etc to get an accurate picture of what I am applying (until the novelty wears off!)

Since installing a WB, never had a lorry leave with at weight only to have less weight at the store/mill.

Grain "seems" to stay in the trailer rather than disappearing on occassion.

All our straw goes out over a weighbridge
I just wish all those farmers selling straw had one . The ones selling more than a few loads that is , lorries having to find weigh bridges in out of the way areas can be a nightmare, it also means invoicing can be done on the spot

I'm sure our WB has paid for itself many times over. Its an old dial one in a pit.
We weigh all crops off field, therefore we know what every field has yielded, and total amount in store. We can calibrate the combine accurately, but I never win the pub yield competition. We have a good check on every load that leaves the farm. We can weigh axles to get tyre pressures right etc etc.
I have a few tales.
The best was a fertiliser supplier who spent 10 minutes telling how good his weighbridges were and how bad mine must be, and why did I even unload it if I knew it was underweight (doh).
When I asked "So what weight did your weighbridge make that load then?"
He relied "Oh we don't weigh them! ..........................long pause and silence both ends of the phone.....................................I'll put a cheque in the post Mr. SB"
T@@$$er.
