Farmdeals - a new digital buying group - BETA testers required !

Through TFF’s history members have suggested that we should somehow leverage the combined buying power of the membership to get us all better prices for our inputs.

We have been approached by several established buying groups who saw opportunity to expand their membership but none ever managed to convince us that they could truly make a difference and the secrecy and membership fees that comes wIth traditional buying groups conflicts with our principles of free farmer access and freedom to share information.

We like the way that none Ag sites such as groupon have been able to aggregate demand to get users better deals and were also keen to use technology rather than offices full of expensive staff to build a buying group with a difference, one with much lower costs meaning we can focus on getting the best possible prices for users.

Farmdeals is the result, we have been developing the idea and the app technology over the last 12 months and are now ready to launch in beta form to a small group of farmers and suppliers.

Key differences over other buying groups include:
  • It will have no joining or membership fee and will be open and free to all UK farmers
  • It will not insist on commitment to use exclusively, members are free to buy from their existing suppliers or even buying groups
  • It will not insist upon price secrecy, in fact actively sharing deals available will be encouraged to try and get everyone even better prices
  • It will use digital technology to keep operation costs lower than traditional buying groups

We are now looking for 50 farmers ahead of a early December launch of the app. Fuel will be the first product available so those testers should idealy have intention to buy fuel or heating oils through December / January.

If interested go to https://www.farmdeals.ag/ where more is explained and beta testers can apply to get involved.

Fill out the registration form and we will be in contact, in early December you will be invited to download the simple app.

If all goes well we will open up to all in the spring and add other products like ag chems, fertilisers and animal feeds.

If just 5% of TFF members use Farm Deals we can very quickly become the UK’s biggest buying group and certainly the UK‘s lowest cost buying group, with margins set to be squeezed and subs diminishing this kind of initiative has to be the way forward.

Great idea , love to join but I'm bought up until May aside from spring herbicides , brexit .....

Once that one's rolling for buying, can you replicate it for selling :) .

Lets not run before we can walk ! But yes the possibilities are there for sure

The app is fantastic and will be a very convenient way to use a buying group 24/7/365. Whilst removing the need for a back office full of salary consuming costs ! - can’t wait to get it all live now, we have spent a lot of time on this over the last 12 months

good luck Clive never as easy thing to get into this & one reason ive never been a fan of buying groups
be interesting to have a like for like price on the likes of Fert products tho......

be interesting to have a like for like price on the likes of Fert products tho......

I‘ve looked at joining traditional buying groups ion the past but expensive joining fees put me off along with any transparency on prices meaning I didn’t really know what exactly I was paying to join up to ! The saving often wiped out by the membership fee and often prices no better than I could get within a bit of shopping about myself ......... surely that defeats the point really other than being convenient I never really “got it“ ?

We are aiming for a much more open and transparent group with Farm Deals and get some real savings, if enough support and get behind it the doors may even open to more direct to manufacture deals in time ??

i do agree the other issue was it can mean the loss of touch with folks you have delt with for years & know your business model & do there best help you.

Exactly - we should be free to buy from whosever we chose, not forced (or worse still pay) to only use one route

Its all about getting the best price, Farm Deals doesn’t care how you get the best price, its just wants to help make sure you do, if a member can get a better price they can bring that supplier to the app and let others benefit and well

Clive, you need to make sure that your online buying service genuinely qualifies as a buying group in the eyes of retailers- some retailers (i.e Waitrose) insist that their suppliers are members of a buying group, hopefully your service will tick that box and at no cost to the farmer.

Its all about getting the best price, Farm Deals doesn’t care how you get the best price, its just wants to help make sure you do, if a member can get a better price they can bring that supplier to the app and let others benefit and well

Might be a problem for those of us perhaps a bit more remote? We get hammered on delivery as hauliers seem to think we’re like Cornwall

Yes but they always stuck their teeth and play the haulage game.
True, ordered something a few months ago, expected delivery is tomorrow now and they’ve asked would I meet 20 miles closer to save the haulier, 1, I’m not there so no, 2, I don’t own a trailer...
