I see Roy couldn't resist the "Should subsidies go" thread :inpain::D

I'm somewhat surprised how many agree they should go really although many of them then want farmgate prices to rise

No one ever seems to think that maybe they should change their own systems ?
You have no control over subs or not
You have no control over prices
You DO have control on your inputs / management systems / what you produce / whether you continue or pack it in & do something else

Lots of options, but some don't seem to see them

What? Roads that we pay a massive fuel tax to fund?
Hospitals (rarely) that I pay private health insurance to get into , then pay a $500 excess every time your admitted as well....
Basic government services that the whole population uses cant be compared to direct annual farm payments......the drought relief packages offered up by the federal government last year are just a joke to make them look like they did something. You need to be virtually destitute to qualify....then if your unviable, you still dont qualify.....

Cows they pay au $2.61a litre for road diesel over there. Makes our $1.49 (81p) seem cheap. Mind you they don't pay council rates on farm land value and a lot of that must go to maintaining local roads.
Ive got plenty of free sky water today hopefully it will come up your way.

Yes, but they also pay less for "red diesel" than we do for eligible off road use once we've CLAIMED BACK the rebate

Yes I can and I will if you don't mind.
I pay taxes so the gov can supply services some of which I never use so fork you if you think I am going to apologise for picking up a few quid because the gov decided it was a good idea to pay it to me for keeping the bit of land I am in charge of in good agricultural and environmental condition

Around 60p/litre here at the moment.

Ok, it has changed a bit since last time I did the comparison

Your red is about the same as we pay after we claim the rebate.
But, we have to pay full pump price for road diesel & then claim back the rebate ( about 30c / l, which is effectively the road tax component of the price ) when we lodge our BAS ( business activity statement, which is how we keep track of GST ( VAT ), each quarter )
It's not a subsidy, it is just claiming back the road tax component of the pump price if the fuel is used in eligible off road use ( not just agriculture ) including mining, marine use, electricity generation etc

Swings & roundabouts Your road diesel might be dearer, but we have much greater distances to cart our produce ( all by trucks ). I'm paying $30 - $60 / tonne on freight for grain, depending where its going. Not up to date with freight costs for livestock, but they are certainly significant given the distances. Not uncommon for cattle to travel 1000 km on a truck

It's about $1.60 here at the pump, I think, so that's about the same 80p mark.

Bit of skywater must have got past you, tipped 33mm out of the rainguage this morning, frosty tonight.

So what's your point? Your the one claiming we receive subsidies here and in NZ. I asked you to point out what they are. I haven't seen anything yet.
