CIWEM have created this table listing the environmental pledges of all of the UK political parties running up to our election. It makes interesting reading. I don't think ANY of them really "get" it yet (except perhaps the greens who are a UK political irrelevance anyway). The biggest issue is CUTTING OUR USE OF FOSSIL FUELS.

Cutting fossil fuel is irrelevant unless you look at many other factors, and the ability to cut the fossil fuel in order to get the solutions put forward, its full of loopholes at the moment.

We are not even close to being able to mine without oil.

If consumption trends continue with population growth its will be a very long time until we can get away from fossils.

Ah that explains it, I was a bit further up than you, half way between Scunthorpe & Grimsby, by Humber airport. It's pretty bleak up that way.

Come on now show some respect your supposed to have lots of fairy lights at christmas and the view on the horizon of all those lights at the oil refinaries and the flickering candle flames out of some of the chimneys not to mention some of the tanks looking like globe christmas puddings. What could be more festive.

Seems a strange statement I would of thought its relatively easy mining without oil as a fuel. Accepted you will need some for lubrication.

Don't worry @renewablejohn - I've nothing but total respect for anyone who would wish to live round Immingham...

Actually it's a fascinating place, there's so much industry there, but would I want to live there - nah.

As an example, this is good for environment, but bad for economy and govt...they want it both ways.

And the rest of the EU will be expecting Germany to pick up the slack in the budget when the UK finally manages to leave :oops:

Can remember my dad ploughing the field which the oil refinary now stands on with a crawler and losing his shot gun as he always rode shotgun in the cab. He came home and said what he had done and after myself and my mother walked round that field three times he finally ploughed it out.

The refinery still have the original farmhouse there as a little guest house for visiting staff.

Edit - though there's two refineries next to one another, so we may be speaking about two different ones.

I got shot scrumping apples from that farm. It was all grass fields when I was a kid with the railway line dividing the fields. Think the railway line still divides the refineries.

I have been officially accepted as a member of the CIWEM "Natural Capital Panel", 25 senior members who advise on the organisations' position on all Natural Capital issues and draft their submissions to government.

What do you all make of their position paper on soils?

Well done for getting in the Lions den. I think you need to set up a seperate thread as its a very important topic.

First impression

What utter waffle. My first job would be get rid of EA and Forestry Commission as neither are fit for purpose.
