What's going to follow on that land Roy?

because we have a full profile of moisture ( our biggest limiting factor ) under the mungbean stubble - the crop that was harvested flat on the ground - we will plant Durum straight into it in June / July
The sorghum stubble, I’ll plant any random legumes I can find ( left over chickpea & faba bean seed ), including clover & vetch if I can find some cheap enough & also some tillage radish / turnips if the seed isn’t too dear, as a cover crop. I will carry that through to spring / flowering ( Oct ? ), before terminating it & fallowing it ( to rebuild moisture levels ) through to a winter crop in June / July next year, most likely Durum also. There will be a lot of wild oats & arg come up, so that will take care of my grass component & add diversity 🤣

Generally, if there was a full profile of moisture under the sorghum at harvest, I would go straight back in with faba beans ( a month too late now ) or chickpeas, but i am worried about disease issues with a wet year & also logistics of shipping chickpeas, so I am not planting any as a commercial crop this year. I could also go straight back in with barley or wheat, but I am trying to reduce my reliance on synthetic N ( which would be needed if I was to do that ), my financial risk / exposure & that is why I want to grow a legume dominant cover crop prior to next years cash winter crop . . .

Bet they don't sit still on the barbeque, and if they did they would take forever to cook.

haha, nah, I love all the wildlife that comes into our yard, we encourage it as much as we can ( I have cat traps set to catch any straying felines that might attack the birds & lizards etc ), so no, I won’t be eating these 🤣

it IS a really nice meat though, but you just have to be careful with cooking it - cook it rare & let it rest for 10 - 20 minutes. Very lean with no fat through it . . .

I cooked some roo once and when I ate it I discovered how they manage to jump so far. They are made of rubber!

Actually had barbecued ostrich last night. Haven't eaten that before, very sweet.

kangaroo ( which we eat frequently ) - cook it rare & let it rest, can be very tender. As an old butcher once said to mum years ago “the best way to ruin a cut of meat is by cooking it” . . .

Just had my Rabobank manager out today ( todays my RDO from council ) looking at my annual review etc. He looked at my A & L & said he thought I’d undervalued my assets a bit. They do their own internal valuations & obviously have a lot more resources at their disposal than I have, but he said I needed to put at least an extra $2K / ha on my figures ( even though they can’t actually tell me a precise figure )

Replacement value on our home has basically doubled in the 6 years we've been here, I don't insure much, but my broker suggested that it would be close to $800k to replace it if it burnt to the ground 🤯 it's only a wee family home

Better to undervalue your assets when planning than over.
