in the desert ( Birdsville in the far SW corner of Qld, on the edge of the Simpson Desert, is now cut off due to flooding )
this is water that has come down from Nth Qld via the Channel Country & is now flooding the desert
hopefully I'll get out there in a few months time on the bike & see the frenzy of life & growth & vegetation in the desert that follows events like this
nature is just fuuuucking awesome

@CornishTone - hopefully we can catch up for a beer at Birdsville pub Aug / Sept. Be great to finally meet you :)
Would LOVE to see that myself (y)

Nature truly is awesome, a rare true use of that abused word

Would that desert hold enough moisture to grow a crop once water has went into soil?

Could nip up with the drill!

nah - sandy soil, not much water holding capacity
even if it did hold moisture, the extremes of heat would hammer anything
desert life forms are all about a frenzy of fast & excessive reproduction in the shortest possible time frame
even if you could grow a crop, freight costs would kill you & it wouldn't be worth it. 1500km Birdsville to Brisbane ( the closest port / major population ) or 1800 km to Adelaide
not to mention that all that land is either National Park, Conservation Reserve, Aboriginal Land or Pastoral Lease - so the question is irrelevant.
best thing is natural herbage / shrubs / grass that have evolved & are suited to that environment & carefully managed grazing

If we get mobile on the bikes, then we will potentially be anywhere from western NSW, northern SA, south west Qld or even eastern WA - so I'm sure there will be an opportunity somewhere :)

I really want to do the Birdsville Track at some point, but with number 2 on the way in July, I’m not sure how practical it will be in the sort term. Will play it by ear! I’d get to the Flinders that might be an option?!

A study of England’s farmland has found key earthworm types are rare or absent in two out of five fields and has led to the majority of farmers affected vowing to change the way they farm.

The results indicate widespread, historical over-cultivation, and may explain observed declines in other wildlife, such as the song thrush, that feed on these worms.

Also Song thrush nests are easy for cats to get at and hold of fledglings
