Farmer Roy's Random Thoughts - I never said it was easy.

They’ve been phasing out coal here for years.

Can’t say I’m a fan of the “Well so and so isn’t doing anything so no point in me doing it” Makes it all seem very juvenile and elementary schoolesque.
I agree but it seems very hypocritical to be phasing out the coal plants while digging more and more of it up all the time. Makes it sound even more stupid than it was before I knew they were shutting their coal fired power plants.

Most if not all of those Australian plants are owned by foreign multinationals.

But Australia has no problems with digging up all their coal with nowhere to burn it:scratchhead::wacky::jimlad:
I would not trust these statistics as it does not seem to gel with the world coal power maps. It also says nothing about all the coal power stations closing which are white on the map below.

err, I haven’t heard anything about Australia closing plants for enviro reasons
There is one in the Hunter Valley ( south of here ) which is being shut down for economic reasons / it is getting old / cost too much to refurbish, but there has been HUGE governmental pressure on the owners ( AGL, who claim to want to phase out coal in 20 yrs or so ) to keep it open . . .
So I call bulls**t on that above post

Australia has absolutely NO plans to phase out coal and our current & previous administrations have been actively ANTI renewables . . .
they promote coal & dismiss every other option at every opportunity

SA Labor gov closed their power stations in favour of renewables (and a big cable to Vic). Then recommissioned the gas one in Port Adelaide after the statewide black out in 2016 as a “back up”.

Surely if there was ever a country that could make solar work it would be Australia!
I have very nearly circumnavigated Australia over the last few years. Have always been surprised just how few solar panels there are. Apart from the odd water heating units on some roofs there are bugger all in comparison with here. It wouldn't surprise me if there is more solar electric in UK than Australia.
Having said that. the UK government have actively encouraged solar whereas Australian government sees it as a threat to their God (coal)

This is incorrect.

There has been state govt rebates for solar installs for years.

If the govt so anti renewalables, why is vic covered in wind towers?

Just coz Roy cant see it doesnt mean its not occuring.

You will need to convert below data to per capita to compare oz and uk.

Bio fuel in the renewables sector is a joke.

The Australian govt is not addicted to rotalties and tax from mining. The Australian public are addicted to it, if you want to sustain the level if social support including farmers in dry times, the money must come from somewhere.

As usual its everyone elses fault bar there own.

Roy are you on any govt assistance program at present? Any other farmers getting a hand? Did anyone take the time to think where that money come from, did anyone knock it back based on it may have been generated by mining?

Are people on the dole considering where the money comes from?

Rain will not end the drought for some people, this will become evident.

Ant....

I didn't mention Roy, I was commenting on what I have seen. I am happy to be proved wrong but you definitely see more solar panels in the UK than what I have seen in Oz.
I also accept there may well be big solar or wind farms where they are less likely to be seen, you have a lot more space for them but they are much more evident in UK.

According to your links UK produced a bit more than Australia . I'd say that was a poor show given the amount of sun you get compared to here although I believe the panels don't like too much heat.

I’ve never seen more nuclear plants than when I was in the UK too.

As you say, it’s all crammed in on that island so easier to see. There’s also almost three times the population requiring power. Just on a level plain you should see three times the solar in the UK based on the population difference alone.

My observations/comments were based on how many houses have solar panels on. That doesn't vary with population difference. You see more houses with the water heating units in Australia but more photovoltaic in UK, or I notice more here anyway.
I will look again and check back. :)

There are lots of houses with solar panels in SA. As I said before, the previous SA Labor gov had a big push on renewables during their time, which included domestic.

There’s wind farms all over the place between Adelaide and Burra on the hills, and a 300 acre solar farm going in at Murray Bridge plus another one planned for the Mid North.

Then there’s the big solar mirror array at Port Augusta which runs a big tomato farm which is quite impressive to see.

I’m not sure if SA is unique in this regard but I suspect they have a higher portion of renewables than other states but they are (or were) also quite dependant on power from Victorian power stations, hence the recommissioning of the gas power station at Port Adelaide.
