There is a serious amount of protein that's eaten your grass there - can't you convert it into ducks or pigs or something - well anything rather than more snails :)

There isn't enough garlic, butter and most importantly people to eat them in in the World - never mind Australia to get through that number.

should just farm the snails & target the restaurant trade

They are good tucker 👍

Yeah, so much for a La Niña year . . .

everyone got excited with the wet Feb & March here, but there has been f**k all real rain since then, apart from 80mm one weekend about a month ago

combine that with 40 + C temps already . . .
Shît loads of evaporation.
Unless we get a flood, it’s gunna be a long hot summer

that’s why I took this Council job. I did actually put a lot of thought into it.
Yes, in the short term I could have made more money by taking on a harvest job - but what happens if there is no harvest next year ? That was actually the plan a few years ago, just chase the harvest work for 1 or 2 seasons a year & spend the rest of the time at home.
I made more in 4 months running a cotton stripper ( 2 machines did 10,000 ha of dryland cotton, $2 million worth of contracting ), $50,000, than I will with a full time job over 12 months with Council. But - those strippers stayed in the shed this year. Yes - at this stage it looks like they will be busy next year as a fair bit of dryland went in up there, but there is no guarantee, no long term security. MY priority has become long term security, so that was the main driver behind my decision. Local government is probably one of the safer areas & parks & gardens is probably one of the safest, as we are already understaffed & provide “essential” services. It is very hard to see how our numbers or budget could be reduced

You are being pragmatic. Very very sensible.

Got a bit exciting when the gale force wind change came through.
Ended up a bit smaller than yesterday’s fire. Ben Everingham lost a couple hundred acres of wheat.
I’m very close to dead centre between yesterday’s fire and today’s fire.
I got a bit closer to the action today and even had my beard singed, but the mullet survived.

I was just talking to my sister who lives in Finley and she said you were having the completely opposite weather to us. She said it had been a very good grass growing year, so plenty of fuel for the wild fires. I was working out there in the mid 1980's on David Knights farm and helped him build his new house out of stone he had got from Malborne, from a prison (I think). I loved it so started to look at some farms in the area. My father said come home and see how I felt after six months. So I didn't do it in the end. Don't miss the fly's. Came back out in 2010 for a wedding and was relived I hadn't done it as you lot had just had a seven year drought and all the irrigation water was being restricted.
