At this stage, my priority is looking after my soils & trying to conserve as much of this water as I can for future crops.
If that means I can’t harvest what is most likely pretty sh!t feed grain, in order to do that, then I’m fine with it.
I will try to harvest this crop IF soil conditions allow, but I won’t compromise my soil for it . . .
I also DESPERATELY want to avoid any & all cultivation’s ( which would be required to level out the massive wheel ruts we would leave at the moment ) which would just ruin the structure & dry the soil out. We have been blessed with all this water. We need to make the most of it, not squander the opportunity

The Durum WAS worth potentially $600 / tonne. Now, IF we harvest it, dunno, maybe $200 ? Along with less tonnes & more costs
Plenty of crops around here are failing the falling numbers test and going feed and we only had 55 to 65 mm.
We still have a lot of Canola to harvest so won’t know how our wheat is for over a week.
Milling wheats are over $400 / t here and feed is about $250.

Got a second header here last night and we harvested about 70 t Canola between 8 pm and 1 am.
Today we harvested another 250 t and are realy making a hole in it now.
Only 250 acres of conventional Canola and 250 acres of RR Canola to go.
All nearby RR Canola storage’s are full though so we will have to fill a sausage bag and store it.

Might get onto wheat or barley in around 5 or 6 days.

so, i ran into my harvesting contractor this morning ( I am on early shift with Council this week doing the Park / Toilet run & he was getting his daily shot of caffeine before starting work ), & while we both agreed it was a sh!t year to be a farmer ( he also farms a few thousand acres as well as contracting ) or a contractor, we cant complain too much.

he was telling me about a friend of a friend near Dubbo. They were doing some work in their garden & managed to bog the Bobcat. In the process of trying to pull it out, the chain snapped & hit old mate full in the face. His wife was holding his face together until the ambos arrived. They turned his life support off yesterday . . .

Glen rang a mutual friend ( who is an immediate neighbour of where he farms ) the other day, to borrow something & he answered from Intensive Care in hospital. Apparently he went in for a hiatus hernia operation & when they opened him up there were all sorts of problems ( hes only 3 years older than me but about twice my size & not the healthiest of specimens . . . )

another local farmer, a near neighbour of mine, early 40's with a family, is now either a para or quadriplegic ( not sure of exact details yet ) after a bike accident. The story is, he had a motorbike serviced in town, was going to meet some mates for a ride & while riding down the main road ( 110km/h speed limit ) the front wheel came off & threw him onto the road & into the scrub beside it. Glen said he must have driven past & not even seen him, as he was behind the ambo that went screaming past then did a U turn & went back to where Grant must have been.
