Hello.
I'm currently working on a PhD looking at the current situation with farm labour in the UK, specifically Devon and, more broadly, the South West. In spite of relatively large amounts of research being conducted around farming in the UK, very little has been done on current members of the agricultural labour force, and it is this ‘blind spot’ I hope to look into further. I’m looking to understand more about the lived experience of people who contribute to labour on farms (from full time workers to apprentices, volunteers and contractors where possible). I'm also interested in talking to farmers about their experience with labour these days, including availability of skilled labour and any general thoughts around workers in agriculture today.
If you are a farmer in Devon or the South West and employ either hired labour and/or use contractors at any point during the year, I'd love to come and talk to you and one or more of those people whom you employ. Or if you're a farm worker or part-time/full time contractor in Devon and have something to say, please also get in touch.
Interviews aren't taking any longer than an hour per person and everybody seems to be enjoying them so far!
I know everybody is very busy but I really hope that some of you might be able to take part.
If interested, you can contact me on: [email protected]
If you'd prefer not to be interviewed but have any thoughts around the issue of labour, either as a farmer or a farm worker, please feel free to post here.
Thank you
