Farmers First Aid

I had this conversation with another Paramedic. I shoot a bit, often in the middle of no where, I'm generally one of the youngest there at 41. I have a basic medical kit in the Landy, but none of us are either A:Qualified or B:Equipped to deal with say a shot gun wound, hear attack or a fall maybe.

Can you recommend what we should carry for such an event? I have looked online and most of the "first aid" kits are not much more than a plaster! the other kits are full on what you guys carry.

@Clive @Chris F maybe an Approved TFF medical kit for Farmers/Shooters/Outdoor people.

I’ve a question

Those electric heart jump start things you see on walls at some pubs and shoping centres now

How can I get one to install in our yard ? There are several businesses and a few older people about - fast access to one might just save a life one day ?

Google is your friend, not very dear for the good it may do one day.
Think some training might be handy to go with it though, not quite as simple as attaching to a twitching corpse and firing him back into action I'm told.

Edit, I've no woods either, if I had your be welcome.
I often wonder how you chaps de stress and get your head right, after some of the jobs you have to do.

You can buy them online, they are not as bad as you think, I was going to get one for the back of the Landy. You've seen my "arts and crafts" boxes!

@Rocket54 Also with all these stabbings in London, if everyone had a medical kit in the car do you think it would help much?

P.S. I don't have any woodland!

I just had a look and they are suprisingly inexpensive. Loads on the net and I notice the british heart foundation and st johns ambulance offer advice on them too.

No woodland here either.

Hi all you Farmers
Great work by the way and long may it continue.
I am a Paramedic with an interest in the outdoors, love playing in the woods, bushcraft etc.
I would be willing to bring any of you farmers up to speed with latest first aid skills in return for access to some woodland?
Please email me if interested [email protected]
remember "simple things save lives"

Tb testing this week and one of us usually breaks something or gets damaged in some way, fancy coming down for a holiday?

In view of the nature and potential severity of accidents and injuries in agriculture I believe there should be a proper first aid course aimed at people in the industry or similar.

I have done first aid courses and neither of them were genuinely useful in all honesty.

I was led to believe the latest defibrillators were pretty crafty things that wont let you do any harm with them provided you know where to place the pads.

Think some training might be handy to go with it though, not quite as simple as attaching to a twitching corpse and firing him back into action I'm told.

The half day AED training I did was a useful revision of CPR that you get on the 1 and 3 day first aid courses together with how to use a defibrillator. Using one isn't difficult as they are designed to be used by the general public, they tell you what to do, and don't activate unless it's appropriate. Whilst training is a good idea, if you need one, get it, open the box and JFDI.

The only limitations I saw were not operator, equipment or availability but that from lone working (if you are doing CPR you'd have to contact someone to bring one to you) and the environment (wet working outside, possible fire ignition in workshop or if fuel leak).

Anything that would get the purchase cost down would be a good idea, ditto for the pads that need replacing every so often etc.

Sorry not got any woodland, just a wild bit of moorland and a few slightly less desolate fields on the outskirts of a small town.

Alongside the BHF, the Fire Service sometimes offer free awareness sessions too.

I used to have to do a first aid course every other when I was a tanker driver. Mostly tailored towards CPR and dealing with traffic/machinery accidents as that was what we were most likely to come across. Found it handy a couple of times, fortunately I haven't had to bump start anyone yet.
There was a defibrillator thingy in the transport office and it saved at least one driver (Heart attack) whilst I was there. Very good idea to have one in my opinion.

Hi David
Thanks for the reply yes messing in the woods great therapy and thank you for the offer I would be happy to recommend a suitable and reliable automated external defibrillator (AED)

Hi Clive I would be more than happy to recommend a suitable kit list and will have a look and get back to you. I feel strongly that the farming community should receive training to deal with life threatening events, which would include serious bleeds, gunshot wounds, cardiac arrest, traumatic amputation and medical emergencies given the nature of your work and rural locations. Did you feel that this is something that you and your colleagues would be interested in doing?

Ha thanks for the offer milkloss my post has generated quiet some interest I really think there is a need to get you farmers training in how to deal with life threatening emergencies, such as how to deal with serious bleeds, medical emergencies, cardiac arrests etc. I would be interested in putting something together like a training package for the farming community and advising on suitable kit list, what are your thoughts?

I am very fortunate to have been given full first aid training through Coast Guard. I have friends and colleagues that have used the Defibs and saved people.... You can see the delight in their eyes when they talk about it!.
Please all , get training , hopefully you will never need it.

Hi Tractorstant
Its really interesting the responses I am getting here I feel seriously you Farmers and associated workers would benefit from some training and a standardised response first aid kit. By standardised I mean the same bag full of the same kit, all set out the same way, so if ever working on another farm the bag would be familiar if needed in an emergency? I would be happy to suggest such equipment and bag as well as costings.
