Their is no requirement to have agricultural qualifications to farm and get the subsidies. However, if you want to be classed as a young farmer (<40 yr) with all it's associated benefits which can be considerable, you do need agricultural qualifications.

Yeah this was a lad of 25ish who came back to get the qualifications as he didn’t get them when younger but his brothers did have them so they were already Farming out in France.

My highest qualification is a B at Geography A Level. Never stopped me working my sheepdogs, building electric fences or grazing stock.

I remember a highly qualified agricultural college professor who got a dairy herd in an appalling state.
His father who never would have had a certificate ran a wonderful little dairy herd.

I actually think it would be a good idea for the industry (and public perception) if livestock farmers had to pass a basic exam in animal welfare. And for Arable farmers to demonstrate an understanding of the use of pesticides and herbicides.
No different from staff in food manufacturing or fast food outlets having to have a Food Hygiene Cert.
Would you use an Accountant or Solicitor who had no qualifications other than "watched what my dad did and been OK so far"

Currently, most farmers are driving around looking at sodden fields wondering if they'll ever get a crop in.

This happens in some private tenancies too - I have at least one student whose landlord wouldn't let him take on the tenancy after his dad without an Agriculture degree.

I see more and more farms being bought by city types with no clue about agriculture, but they can fill in forms very well to collect tree grants etc. They are a danger to themselves , livestock and the public.
