Farmfluencers

What sort of inducements are being offered to very publicly switch loyalties?

What calibre of influencer would risk their lucrative product placement deals by jabbering on the internet about the back-handers and brown envelopes?

If I were a high profile instagram influencer, I wouldn't be telling you all about it on here.... ;)

Bet it happens more than we realise, but I guess that's the point, it's subliminal advertising. Adam Henson is usually seen either with a new JCB or New Holland or an IAE race when working with animals, and the branding is always prominent. Gareth Wyn Jones does quite a bit with Honda and possibly Isuzu I think, and his pickup was very prominent the other night on the Royal Welsh programme.

Farmers are prime market for influencers / subliminal advertising because they rarely understand that there is such a thing as subliminal advertising let alone that they are being influenced. Gareth Wyn Jones has been at it with John Deere for years now. I've actually stopped following him on Twitter because he is tweeting more and more about his sponsored products (particularly Honda) and less about farming matters.

Although I am surprised about how much of it is going on. Dan Lydiate - who I wouldn't have thought wouldn't have been well known outside of Welsh / rugby circles - gets a MF tractor and Suzuki quad, but that is more for old style promotional work.

Fair play to them anyway, cleverer than I am.

The point could also be said that if you're gonna rave about it anyway, there's no need for them to incentivise you to do so.

It's also possible this works the other way round - take Clive's comment about the CAT generator. If you're vocal on social media about good things, it's possible you're also vocal about less positive experiences. Thus a dealer may be more cautious of supplying to you. Someone once told me they only write negative reviews of places they visit that aren't up to scratch, never positive.....because they don't want them to encourage others to visit and then run the risk they become so popular that they become mainstream and thus get spoilt. (could equally be argued some think they have more influence than they actually do!!!)

I guess it depends if you believe in there being no such thing as bad publicity.

MF combine anyone....?!
Free JD head gaskets for the live of your ownership?!
I guess in my examples you have 2 types of advertising; product placement and product endorsement.
The 1st is slightly more subtle as the product isn't referred to directly and relies on the person being well respected and an influencer already. Take Adam on Countryfile for example a lot of people will look up to him as a farmer (I know the TFF collective don't but bear with me) and so would respect his product choices. And as such will base their buying decisions on what they see him to be buying ie. if a New Holland is good enough for him it's good enough for me.
Product endorsement is where the influencer actually talks about the product. This time it relies on the person being (imo) extremely well respected as it relies on the public trusting their opinion. Otherwise they come across as a sell out. There is also a fine line as to how much endorsement is too much, if its done too much I disengage and actual dislike the product.
Regards raving about a product regardless, if I was getting something out of it I'd rave about it more!
And bad publicity. That's the risk all companies take when advertising products.

Farmers are a competitive bunch so are always trying to keep up with/be better than the Jones's, making them ideal targets for this type of marketing. Unfortunately there arent that many well liked/respected and social media savvy farmers out there atm.

I think some tread very carefully around me sometimes but that's about as good as it gets - My recent issue with our CAT generator was going nowhere until I started shouting about it on twitter and all of a sudden they couldn't do enough to help and all was sorted within 24hrs

no one is getting free drills or tractors though I can assure you ............................... unfortunately !

Are you sure about this?

I didn’t expect any confessions. Just in particular a certain SP sprayer’s star has fallen whilst another trailed has risen. Key opinion formers are hard currency in a very conservative industry.

Over on Twitter Chas Sutcliffe is always posting about his Spreadabale and Allflex. Ian Dicko is always on about Land Rover and Barbour. I've no idea if they get anything out of of it though. And I bet the very famous ones like Red Shepherdess, Yorkshire Shepherdess or JR Strickley are inundated with sponsorship/endorsement opportunities.
Maybe I should have posted more about our new handling system, Batemans might have sent us some more free stuff :sneaky: rather than a couple of hats

Apart from Adam Henson and the Yorkshire Shepherdess, I've never heard of any of the others mentioned. Should I get out more?

That was a pickup supplied by Telesgop, the TV production company. Thanks for watching.

I've gotten into this Instagram carry on recently - since the turn of the year... just to see what the fuss was about.

Well, my private life is that boring I started putting up posts of what I was getting upto on the farm (abit like what I do on my thread on here). I keep my face behind the camera, but I use my name on there. In 7 months it's really surprised me how far you can reach without trying. I have people all over the world following me.

Sadly the only offer I've had from any companies was an enquiry whether I'd be interested appearing on the next series of Love in the Countryside

Get yourself past 20,000 followers and the offers will start pouring in.

I’d reckon the ‘Grass people’ get pretty good terms on items, and quite a lot of loaners pushed their way too.

Slightly different reach from the normal Ag related content though.
