Farming going down with hardly a whimper...

Can't comment on his assessment of the politics of it all ( not really interested tbh), but just on a practical point, he says that BPS is going but doesn't mention its replacement with ELMS.
Whether that is because he doesn't know about ELMS, or mentioning it would get in the way of his narrative, who knows (or cares ? ) .

But ELMS doesn't fit everyone .
I don't sgree with everything he said but agreed with enough to forward it on to my Tory MP ....who I support . It doesn't hurt them to hear these things .

I dont know why its coming as such a surprise in our new post EU era. At least the French would kick up a stink and stand up for what they believed in which offered us a degree of protection within the EU.
The problem is that a majority of farmers supported and indeed continue supporting the dismantling of their businesses and potential loss of their family homes. The NFU is proving categorically that its initials stand for No Fücking Use, just in case anyone was in any doubt perviously, but what can they do when a whole lot of their members are turkeys voting for Christmas?

The one short term saving grace is the timing of all this, when there is a shortage of meat worldwide due to equally short term issues with China wanting a massive increase in imports. This will hopefully give UK farmers a 24 to 36 month grace period before cheap imports are able to pile in.

It's not specifically the Australian deal that is the issue here. It is the precedence it sets for future deals with all other non-EU countries and the effect this will have on our ability to even export to the EU due to the need to inspect and certify country of origin and differing/unacceptable standards for individual markets [the EU in particular].

Johnson is being totally disingenuous in pointing out non-existent "opportunities" for UK farmers to export meat and dairy products to countries that themselves have a surplus and rely on their own produce being exported. Even Japan, a predominantly lactose intolerant race of people have been touted as a significant potential for our dairy exporters. Come on! While they may take a truckload or three, it hardly makes up for the loss of Europe.

Johnson is being about as truthful about this subject as he was about fisheries. Fishermen were even more rabid Tory and Brexit believers/supporters than farmers and look where that has got them.

Its because its total budget is going to be less than half the BPS and is aimed at cutting production and that means cutting farmer's income by adding costs and restrictions while giving other countries our market.
The competition is not just about free trade of course. There are other even more negative indicators such as the ones discussed at length already, such as the zero emissions targeting animals in particular, plus the advent and promotion of 'eat less meat' which actually aims at 'eat no meat' which coincides with the introduction of fake meat products.

I'd you cant stand the heat get out of the kitchen, the solution is in the farmers hands, for dairy it started when the mmb was ended, dairy farmers all had the chance to join MM and keep the upper hand, too many sold out their own future for a penny a litre, I saw the end game and gave up in 98, sold my quota for a fortune and diversified into non food production, quite a few round here now sell their milk direct, there is a bright future for those farmers who look beyond their own gate. Those that moan and cry are finished unless they get a grip

If you don't like mine, that is your problem.
Act your age not your shoe size.
Come back when you have a significant intelligent contribution to make. That'll take a few years by the sound of it.

I've listened to Dieter Helm's Audible book (well about 19 hours in) and in amongst the repetitive get the polluter (farmer) to pay for his damages to the environment, this Oxford academic and learned economist is constantly saying "with sheep and other marginal farming activities hardly being profitable let's re-wild much of Britain and save the planet". His assumption is that only some farmers can afford the new costs of compliance with ever more stringent regulation and a watchful educated consumer public. I note his PA's email address is listed on the e-packaging and I'm all for emailing him and just stating what might be the fatal flaw in his argument : if you don't get your food from this Country are you in danger of assuming there is a massive surplus produced to your ever more exacting standards elsewhere?
