Farming going down with hardly a whimper...

The governments ambition is no money for anyone or anything to do with farming.
Young or Old!
Any pretence otherwise, ELM’s or whatever, is nothing more than a smokescreen.
A fair wack of the population choose to source their food via Aldi or Lidl.... because it is cheaper to do so.
The Government is taking the same approach......food is available elsewhere in the world for less cost than in the UK.
No matter how it is dressed up...direct financial support to produce food is going to disappear....

Not sure how advocating making smaller family farms often with young families a priority is money going to a minority, seems to me most of the money at the moment goes to larger estates with minimal families involved. Difficult to get public sympathy when often hundreds of thousands or more goes to very rich individuals. If we want more young farmers in agriculture we have to have a financial help system geared to smaller farms where they can at least make a start.

Yet Prince Charles runs an estate of over £1 Billion and already gets lots of "Environmental" and "Green" funding.

One of my neighbours, who is at least 5x larger than me was recently awaiting a £75K cheque for Stewardship money. Best still those who have no "Environmental Assets" having cleared the lot in previous decades are now best placed to cash in again.

It's just another money making scheme for the minority that can qualify - usually as a result of prior status.

Why would I want more young people in farming ? Seriously ? I never got a penny and yet I've seen many many people given a foot up the ladder if not thrown to the top of the ladder.

No thanks. I want equality. Not this "Interpretated Farce" - aka Red Tractor.

Totally agree, although dragged along by the wife to Lidl's as passing yesterday & have to say very surprised at their whole hearted support for British farmers in the meat section, if only others were so supportive!

They'd rather spend the money on themselves and their £100K to £200K wages plus living allowances and jollies.

Having had a meat pie with a lump of grisle and nothing else .. I'll pass on Aldi, low quality and poorly inspected.

Don‘t know about Aldi UK, but Aldi in ROI fresh meat counter is TOP drawer. ONLY Irish meat is stocked with full traceability.
Yes there are a range of European sausages I wouldn’t give to my mutt, but there’s also plenty Irish craft sausages and the likes.

Aldi in Devon & not quite so bad Lidl give a bit of the appearance of stack it high sell it cheaper, there is no reason that this should be the case unless wages are lower & staff far busier, as the French can show us so well presentation is half the battle & doesn't necessarily need to cost more.

Yes, same in the Aldi's here.
But the main reason why Mrs Two Tone shops at Aldi is because of their Gin !

Public support should be restricted to smaller family farms & especially new entrants, what chance have youngsters got when competing with large estates subsidy wise.
There should be a top limit of £25k land wise, anything above that should be enviro led.
The first 50 Hc. is front loaded here. Reducing subsidies as size increases. First 50 suckler cows are full sub, then reduced payment, after 139+ get no sub
Far better to have 10 farmers on a 100 HC. each than 1 on a 1000. Keeps the schools open shop, banque , Drs etc.

When can I move to such a sensible country as France, if only I was 30 years younger!

Looks like a silage field ?
Definately not a silage field! That field and the one closer to the road (@JP1 will know which I mean) I ploughed and seeded nearly 11 years ago now, the next two along where just left to regenerate, all having been organic arable land previously. It's fairly poor land, burns off quickly in dry weather, which we get here usually! Need to get some more cows up there next week.

When I took ewes and lambs over there I passed the "regenerated" field which got me thinking about Longhorns. I wouldn't want to make forage of that - and I mean that in the nicest way
