in the Mail today there is a croft for sale with the usual lovely photos. What I wondered is there any other farming there apart from sheep ? Or do they import all their vegetables etc.
That be the fethaland bit?
That would be sheep only I would say but some of the other land which is for sake with it would be ok for cattle.
We are at the opposite end from there and the land is better. We have sheep, suckler cows (all fattened) and grow barley.
Grow tatties and veg for our own use but there are a few commercial tattie growers locally.
Fire away with any questions.
One of my son's pups should arrive on Shetland today. One went up to Skerray last week. I'd say you need to be of a special breed to farm there - strong of character.
You can grow barley up there ! Showing my lack of knowledge does it not get flattened by the wind ? Driving round Norfolk I can see flattened areas near harvest time. Visiting the Scottish islands is on our wish list, only done 2 so far, very much enjoyed it.
Crop can get flattened the same as anywhere but it's is all in the shed for this year, straw still to bale though. Spring barley suits well here, usually enough wet, never to hot, plenty sunshine during growing period.
