I did look to see if there was a thread dedicated to historical farming photos but couldn't find one, so here we go. Feel free to add your photos from days gone by or link to other sources.

Reading University have an absolutely brilliant achieve of older photos - just a few here from Dairy Show at Olympia in 1947 and A Massey in Claridges!

When I worked for Vaccar in the 50 's they did a similar 2 unit portable machine like the no.8 photo , and if I remember rightly it was powered by an ex WD (aircraft ) army surplus aluminium vane pump . I think at that time it was mostly outdated , except for a few hobby farmers or goat keepers . At any rate we didn't sell many , and were discontinued except for special "one-offs" .

Many farmers I remember from the fifties and sixties often wore a tie: was never sure just why but they did tend to be those who had larger farms employing a few workers, so perhaps there was an element of snobbery?

When my Dad started farming in 1945 as a slight young chap of 20, his only worker was a much bigger man in his 40’s or so with a moustache, when reps called as they used to regularly in those days they always assumed that Fred was th boss and Dad was the boy. This really annoyed him as you might expect, so he started wearing a smart shirt and a tie so they would speak to him instead!!
