Hi Simon, how come this year it has been so humid at times with no thunderstorms? Is the air drier, we have had a lot of days in the east where the humidity hangs in the air today being one of them you can cut it with a knife, normally we would have had one thunderstorm or 2 to clear it up but since May none this year?

Thanks

Hi Wombat...funnily enough we were discussing this in the office yesterday.

This isn't the definitive answer, but our hunch is that the ground has become so dry that there just isn't the moisture available to generate the clouds which of course produce the thunderstorms. You may have seen the video I shared on Facebook which showed the swirling hay filmed in Somerset? That wasn't a tornado but actually a thermal and showed that they are around but don't have moisture within them.

Given the generally east or southeast flow the air has come off the continent and so is even drier. As son as the winds change to something more westerly there will be moisture and so storm could be generated.

Sounds like a good story anyway doesn't it ? ;)

Thanks Simon, it's just very unusual to get to mid July and not heard a single rumble of thunder all year which we haven't this year. I know some areas have had some but they never seem to have got even close to here.
