So as a lot of us im very tired of spending money on chemicals and not seeing a return for it .
i would like to just bang on a pre emergence and let nature take its course as often the margins dont justify and expenditure after that .
can i buy chemicals wihout been bullied into forking out my entire bank balance ??

If you are Red Tractor you will need a bit of paper with a BASIS qualified advisors recommendation and number on it.

I do all my own now but it’s still worth having another (more experienced) agronomist have a look round for a couple of hours a year to bounce strategy off.

Well said. A good agronomist can save you their fee and much more in recommending reduced rates where possible, or other bright ideas we may not think off. An outside view is very valuable indeed.

From long experience, those farmers that go the basis route and do their own agronomy don’t tend to be as professional as an agronomist who walks around the county. The agronomist sees everyone’s problems and advises his / her clients accordingly, whereas Basis qualified farmers tend to be blind to their own problems, and too late to react when confronted with them.
The third option, using neither agronomist or Basis qualification, is an invitation to ‘making an utter pansy of the job’.

Not sure I agree with your sweeping generalisation about Basis qualified farmers!!
Define "professional" whats professional about pushing unjustified levels of high margin products onto farmers as is often the accusation thrown about the OP's current provider...

Anyhow, for me joining NIAB Tag gives me the excellent field days to visit which are hosted around the region on farm, helping me not get "blinded by my own problems and the back up of regional Niab agronomist.

I agree with your third option though!!

www.marketplace.farm 100% independent , buying group prices without the transaction fees, membership cost or commitment

getting busier all the time, the more that use it the better prices we get, if you can’t find what you need on there call the office number or pm @Chris F as we can get pretty much any product competitively

Always done our own here. Dad never had an agronomist and I did basis when I was 22. We are members of niab and CMI (now green crop information) and get all the best independent advice and data we need from them. They have their own agronomists on hand to offer extra advice and do a lot of good field days. There is no need to be paying someone to tell you how to grow combine-able crops, they are not rocket science.
even independents often err on the side of caution and over spend. Agronomists love to make things sound really complicated but they are not, spring barley isn’t exactly difficult is it.
strip the cost out of your business, get educated, take ownership and control of you’re crop growing. Many farmers are simply applicators who do as they are told.

On top of that you can always get people in for advice and different thoughts on a day rate. Edaphos, soil first farming, Philip Wright, Neil fuller etc etc
