What happens if Scotland goes independent?
Would new rules affect land values ?
Probably not. It’s a case of supply and demand, plenty of people out there with plenty money who want their slice of paradise. Independence or no independence.

Some kids get thrust into management at home from an early age and then cant escape
Due to parents death, illness or having other jobs

I know a couple of people that had to take over day to day running early on after their father died, mother still controlling the money though. Good on them they worked hard and got the chance to prove themselves early.
There's plenty who make it to their 40's or 50's and still have no control though. Too scared to leave in case they get written out of the will, parents still in charge of the big decisions, basically still general farm workers and can't do anything else as they've never had any outside experience.

I surpose it would depend on how successful the country was or was not as to the value of land in Scotland , personally I think it would be the biggest financial disaster ever ! Make Greece look flush , thus de value ing everything, if the opposite happen everything go up in value I just can’t see that scenario .

I know a fella not far from here in his mid 70’s, only got to be a signatory of the cheque book 2 years ago, when his mother in her late 90’s took unwell. Unsurprisingly the place is well run down

Usually dip down to the -30s at night quiet often over winter but this past one has been warmer than any one I’ve seen.
Paying for it now. Cold north wind snow flurries and nights below freezing. Would like to be in the mid teens by now but not looking that way anytime soon. Last harvest was hit and dry. Delivered wheat last week at 11 percent moisture that wasn’t dried just cooled. Rape wouldn’t test on my meter so below six percent.

So they cannot intervene retrospectively?

As in a deal is done, ansd then someone else pokes a nose in...?
They have two months from signing and can intervene in any land deal over a half hectare. You can pay them to release you early.

They are not strong here because there is not much competition for land.

People spend a long time dreaming up ways to get round them.

In a notorious sale of a large acreage in the Indre region, several farmers were asked to form seperate land holding companys with 1000 shares each. A Chinese company bought 999 shares leaving each farmer with 0.1% of their farm. The SAFER could do nothing because the total area was not transferred.

If it happens there will be big changes in land laws and taxation, but not straight away
Is there anything stopping them doing it now?

I suspect, despite all the huffing and puffing about land reform, the Scottish Government knows full well that a collapse in land values would put a serious dent in their tax revenue and would be reluctant to implement anything as radical as you imply which would potentially jeopardise it.

It's the same problems the world over, I seriously considered emigrating to nz about 15 yrs ago, circumstances dictated that it wasn't possible, but I don't think I'd have been much better off tbh, particularly if involved with farming, may have been different in another industry, I'm not really sure if there are any countries in the world that value their farmers tbh, and it's likely always been the same.
Not sure of the circumstances now but visited NZ North & South a few years ago & got to meet a few farmers, seeing their attitude to farming & outlook on life if I was given my life all over again if it wasn't for the fact that it's bloody miles from any decent civilisation ( Australia doesn't count) I would have gladly moved there to farm. The people there are some of the nicest you can meet & the countryside stunning.

They cant touch taxation , which is the chief culprit

I suppose it could be, They did comment on how run down and untidy the UK looked, they could not understand why many of the houses in our old village were in need of minor repairs or at least a lick of paint and yet there would be a new Range Rover in the driveway, nothing wrong with the UK, plenty of Kiwis move there, really depends on the lifestyle you want.
Increasingly common, the monthly interest on the Range Rover/ other must have status symbol doesn’t leave enough to cover the basics

That’s what the kids couldn’t fathom, their thoughts were that you cover the basics before you buy the Range Rover, my reply to them was you have lived in NZ most of your life.
Lots of people have no chance of owning a home now in uk, so they buy a nice car.
Whats wrong with that?
The houses you saw in a run down state will be largely tenanted and neglected by the owner.
