Police are appealing for information after a farmworker was attacked by a gang of hare coursers.

The unnamed man said he was attacked by four men armed with hammers and a baseball bat while working on a farm at Shalford, north Essex.

He managed to escape from the gang – who were seen driving a dark green Subaru Forester – but not before suffering some injuries.

The man told the Halstead Gazette the gang were becoming notorious in the area and he warned others to avoid conflict with them at all costs.

As well as violence, problems associated with hare coursing include criminal damage to property and agricultural land, theft and anti-social and threatening behaviour.

The man said the encounter – at 3.45pm on Monday, 15 January – came days after the four men were caught by the landowner trying to break into the farm.

“I reckon they came back thinking I was him. They pulled up behind me and just went for me. Luckily, I managed to outrun them.”

The man said the gang went hare coursing during the daylight hours before touring local villages at night “looking for stuff to steal”.

“My advice would be not to approach these guys. You need to phone the police as soon as you see them because otherwise they will go for you.”

Cambridgeshire attack
Cambridgeshire farmer Will Wombwell had a similar experience last summer when he encountered a gang of hare coursers at Ickleton, nine miles south of Cambridge.

Mr Wombwell needed hospital treatment after being attacked with a metal bar.

Last autumn, Essex police said they had received 500 reports of hare coursing during the year – a significant increase on 2016.

But the force cautioned that the rise reflected an increase in the number of reports coming in, rather than a big increase in the number of incidents.

Chief inspector Ian Gennery said: “Hare coursing is a problem for our rural communities and it is often connected to organised crime groups operating across the region and even nationwide.”

Anyone with information about the assault should contact police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
