Feed bin issue

We had a 5t delivery of sheep nuts about a week before Christmas. There are a lot of moldy nuts which seem to be through out the feed. I have been picking out the bad stuff but it seems to be getting worse.

Any idea why this has happened? - it is a fibre glass bin, brand new last year and this is only the third lot of feed. I also checked it and blew out the dust before the delivery.

I'd say the nuts were too fresh when blown in

It could have been damp when it was put in your bin. Out of date nuts might go musty or have mites, but mould needs dampness. I would be worried about microtoxins from the mould and wouldn't feed them, also the spores could damage your lungs. Your supplier should be informed, as it may have been a bad batch and you won't be the only one.

Sudden swing in temperature and humidity wouldn’t help either. We’ve had bitter cold and dry followed by warm and humid here - means anything solid gets dripping wet with condensation.

Thanks for your replies - I will contact the supplier - was going to anyway but just wanted the opinion of some knowledgeable chaps first!

Mould is caused by dampness and heat, I do not believe the posts about cake being warm from the mill, however it could of come from the lorry body being washed out, and not dried properly, water can sit in the rear well and seal after being washed out, and driver has not checked it dry and all water is out, but this would only happen if it was the first drop out of back box on wagon.
Other than that, your bin is letting water in somewhere

Feed is warm after it`s come through a lorry blower and it can still feel warm some hours after so this may be part of problem if condensation is an issue. Is it a very big bin with lots of "empty" space above the most recent drop of feed?

Corn that went into the feed was harvested with to higher a moisture content i expect. I have seen some right sh.ite being re-dried that must go fousty when mixed

When pellets are made there is a good amount of steam added and this combined with the heat generated forcing the feed through the pellet mill need to be taken out ,thus removing the moisture too as it is cooled. My money would be on hog feed delivered and heat rising to the surface turning ti a moody crust. As your use ing it small amounts break off and trickle thru. If the bin empties from the centre I’d keep pulling it out until it clears or if it gets worse you’ll know sooner rather than later.
