Feed storage

Just interested to see how people store there feed. We currently buy coarse lamb creep and whole oats from Tamar milling in tote bags which we collect due to delivery being a killer. would like away of storing the feed once we get it back to the farm to keep it out of reach of rodents and alike.

anyone come up with any solutions?

IBC plastic inner bottle cut in half, and then carefully sit the tote bag of feed inside it. Mice don’t seem to be able to gnaw through the IBC plastic and don’t climb up the sides to access the feed either.

Or get a barn cat?

I planned to make a frame up to hang the bag up so I can insert dispenser for a rodent proof temporary feed bin.

...in moving farms I’ve since managed to loose the main bit of the dispenser!

All our feed is stored in 1100 litre eurobins. Just have a scout round the back of business premises on lockdown.

How many bags do you get through per year?

10 - 12 probably. the other problem is that the only access to the farm is through a 12ft gate way. so getting a wagon in to have it blown in isnt really an option, and we cant make it wider

All the same type or different? If all the same there may be a case for a silo and a wider gate. If not, I'd stick with what you have but maybe put the bags on/ in a trailer to provide some additional isolation.

I'm not convinced you'd keep mice out of a shipping container. A hole the size of a pencil is big enough apparently. I can never get my containers shut that tight.

15' gateway now, but I am pretty sure we had blown bulk feed delivered when the gate was 12'

Standard lorry should get through 9 foot gap if it has a straight run, maybe a bit more for the mirrors.

I used a shipping container, put the bags of anything onto a pallet, and then dump them in the vermin proof container...

I am mulling over an idea of pushing 4 together and laying sheets of marine ply on top to use as a feed loft, the bins essentially acting as modern day staddle stones.

Rodents still get in shipping containers as people are people and don't always close the doors behind them?!
Like most things management is paramount but implementing it with other folk is another thing!
