Feeding beet

How long will chopped beet keep for spread on grass?? Iv got the chance of beet pretty cheap but the logistics of feeding it aren’t the best… wondering if I hired a muck spreader and tractor and spread a few loads thinly across a grass field would it keep or would it all start too rot in a a few days?? … alternatively how much beet really would I expect too feed 180 twin bearing ewes a week? 6-3 weeks pre lambing? Normally start on energy licks at 6weeks then corn at 3 weeks

Take it you mean for broken mouthed ewes? My breeding flock get it whole. Only chop for the toothless old biddies I’m trying too fatten
No they’re all full mouthed just thought be less mess going into spring left on the grass if it went out through a spreader, whole seems too leave skins everywhere from what Iv seen of other people

They aren’t aren’t as hard o their sheep as me than! Mine leave sweet FA. Only when it gets proper wet will they leave the shells. The 300-400 older ewes in for twins will get just under 1t of roots a day. They should clean up at that. Plus haylage, Mollasses & nuts

I’m not looking too leave a mess though just supplement energy on good grass pre lambing, so I can’t keep them tight too force them too eat the shells as they’ll make a mess and the landlords won’t like that on there mowing ground… might be a none started for my system but just looking at the options…

It certainly does mark the ground if it’s not super dry. No matter how you spread it the stupid buggers won’t quietly spread out evenly too eat it. They will swarm and black it up a bit

That’s kinda why I was thinking could I fill a few muck spreader up and spread say 30
Ton across a 20 acre field nice and thinly then turn ewes on too it and theyd just spread out nicely and not make a mess just have the energy from the beet and the grass or would the beet go bad…

Ahhh, I’m with you. I think it would go bad before you ate it all. The sheep will probably still eat it but how much nutrition will be left I don’t know
