Feeding fields beans to finishing cattle

I think the point he was making is that why do we need soya when we have home grown protein.

We don't feed soya. Feeding soya meal is no different from feeding citrus pulp or Trafford Gold. We could all stop feeding soya meal tomorrow and it wouldn't save an acre of rainforest. There's enough people beating us up without us doing it ourselves.

Got me thinking if beasts are on ad lib and they eat a kg less because not quite so palatable would they put any less weight on because that last kg may just pass through and not be needed if you get my drift

How do they compare to other protein sources in terms of feed quality? Does the fact they are starchy make up for the fact that they are lower in protein. Last year I found them expensive as a protein source compared to bought in hipro mineralised pellets. I sold 22/24 % protein beans for £245 and could buy hipro 36% pellets for £289. Admittedly prices have altered this year. Are the beans better value because of what else they contribute to the ration?

We like to harvest 2 t p a . Depending on season obviously. Did 2.5 t 2 years ago, only 1.5 last year. We now chop our straw although have baled it in the past. Makes good bedding but is very dusty.

should we use limestone flour all the time ? we use it when we change to new crop barley or change of ration . a neighbor uses it all the time and swears by it but his ration changes all the time.

Whole crop them, easy, quick, no messing.
Starch, protein, high dry matter, scratch factor and very palatable followed by early entry for a winter cereal into an improved seedbed containing nitrogen to grow.
Also a very good nectar source when flowering and good habitat for birds.
Have a look at what information Kelvin Cave Ltd has on the process.

Have been offered beans by a neighbour and wondering how it would work if we added beans to our finishing ration to feed to our bull calves? We normally start our calves on a 16% store mix then gradually change them over to the beef mix we finish them as under 16 month bulls but aim to get the first of them away at about 13 months just wondering would it be worthwhile and mean only buying 1 blend?
