Feeding peas/beans to sheep

Is anyone feeding peas or beans to sheep? They seem like a good protein source but didn't know if they'd be any good.
I'm guessing they would need putting through a mill before feeding?

Not currently using them but have done in the past. Ground coarsely through a hammer mill first. See thread Daily Mail : most meat is tainted by GM, post #15. In Agricultural Matters. Sorry don't know how to get that to this thread.

Ah okay, I've got a roller mill but not a hammer one so could try putting them through that to crack them up a bit

If it's peas, roller mill should be ok. I run mine through the roller mill with barley for cattle. I feed my small flock of ewes some of the same feed at lambing time if they are in the shed.
Don't use beans but on my mill and mixer, I would put them through the hammer mill not the roller mill.

unless they are reject peas or beans maybe out of yer own seed heap i would be thinking of lower input sheep
have put reject peas in sheep nuts we had made
one thing you would have to watch for is protain overloading

I suppose that will be O.K. if moisture is right. The chap I get our beans off gets them that dry they're like bullets - hence the hammer mill.

There seem to be so many peas and beans around this year that neighbours are struggling to get rid of the price is fairly low for any that haven't made human consumption, what would protein overloading be? Be careful not too feed too much?

Yes,I am feeding Peas whole, mixed with barley.Part reason being this is a homegrown (lowcost) mix.
I am feeding after lambing through early lact. Very good energy.
Note to be aware DUP not as good as in soya or rapeseed.
