Times have changed:scratchhead:. Grandpa used to have morning tea and anyone here had to as well. Then lunch then afternoon tea before milking. Now I simply dont stop  . When in tractor I dont stop for lunch and sometimes not even for an evening meal. To much time is wasted middle of the day when your seriously busy.
Contractors feed themselves. always have... We did have the backpackers having breakfast with us before calf feeding when we had backpackers. Now one permanent and he can and does look after himself.

There are still farmers' wives; and there are also wives of farmers, whose main role seems to be to ride around in an Evoke with sunglasses on top their heads.

When I was in Ayrshire, you got fed if working for someone, or fed the shearers/silage gang if in at ours. It’s respectful and a way of saying thanks, and hopefully they’ll look forward to coming back.
Over here I feed the shearers , and offer to anyone doing work etc.
In the 3 years I’ve been doing silage for other people, I’ve yet to be offered anything at all. Borders folk are miserable C ants !🤦‍♂️👎

We used to always feed silage team and shearers. COVID scaremongering stopped that last year but we had the silage team we’re back in house this year for it. Shearers said they are happy enough with bringing and stopping for there own food so fair enough. I do a bit of contract baling for folk but never get offered anything which doesn’t bother me one bit. Nowt worse than eating somebody else’s dodgy cooking 😂

Tea, coffee and cake for anyone working here + delivery drivers always get offered . We find that contractors don't usually want to stop for too long as they always need to get somewhere else .
Years ago when I was on an arable farm working I would go on late if I was fed but if nothing had appeared by 5 to 5.30 ish then at 8 pm I pulled the stopper and went home .
We do have a local contractor who is on is own and during baling season we know he doesn't eat properly so my OH will often cook extra and take a meal round for him ....even though he does very little for us . ....we found out a couple of weeks ago that if he has been fed somewhere else then he saves the OHs meal and has it for breakfast !

Why does it have to be the wife cooking. Can’t you do it 😂

Quite a few spots we go silaging at feed us.. we usually help sheet up so it's nice when they feed us after, best this year was steak and chips at the pub. Its good for staff moral and farmers love feeding us and having some craic, even some that didn't used to feed us now bring a beer and pizzas and have commented how they enjoy a good chin wag after. It makes sheeting up feel not as bad when it's appreciated after 😅

Who still feeds staff
And more so if working late in harvest , and not stodgy old fish chips or take away , shite
I mean fed proper cooked food like meat and veg or home made pie mash veg etc , and some pudding,
If after 7 pm get supper brought ,
We have one farm that feeds us if working after 5pm, two or 3 more give you a beer or an icecream, if we are working very late we get a take away delivered out which I pay for for the lads

always fed the shearers, combine driver. silage baler/wrapper carried their own but got an ice cream if it was a hot day. when i did contract spraying i never stopped just ate on the move. my son in the recovery business eats once a day, rest of the time just coffee.

Neighbour used to bring a chippy tea to the silaging gang. One year the weather was catchy and they always seemed to end up going out for a few hours late in the day.
He had a good lot of silage to make and he said it cost him £2/ac in chips that year!! 😂😂
But if he rang and said can we go and it’s a late shift they would

Years ago, when lorries were handball off, 20 t load of Scotch seed in cwts arrived late morning.
We started unloading, as dinner time approached we were about halfway through, so old man says to driver 'do you stop for dinner'. Thinking driver would have something in the cab.
Quick as a flash driver said 'aye I will, thank you very much'.
Mother had to quickly set another place.
