Feeding

so thinking of changing to feed to yield.
Looking what people think to flat rate or feed to yield. I know the obvious 1 is will save abit on cake and better cows will give abit more. Just the few that are low will they drop more.
Cheers

Our cows get up to 8kgs in parlour until abuot 60 days post calving then I start pulling them back a bit. So I guess i'm feeding to yield. So I guess i'd best get my meters tested too as what the PC tells me aint what the tanker is telling me :(

Why?? I love to feed to yield and take in other factors too. Not using a graph but treating each cow as a individual. I know it's not as easy when you have big numbers.
More to feeding cows than just yield

It favors grain burner cows rather than cows that can produce milk from forage.

Good cows shouldn't need individual feeding.

Highest production herds in the world blanket feed.

Are the highest production cows the most profitable cows in the world??
I'm for a bit more of a rounded approach to be able to cope with the £300 a ton feed or 18ppl milk price when they arrive.

Like multi power said, I'm sure your system works for you.

For me, using your same concerns of low milk price being around the corner is why I don't want to go down the path of individual feeding.

Put it this way for my case against indivual feeding.

I'm currently feeding 6kg of grain blend and the rest grass. Someone would say that the 60lt cow losing weight that might not get pregnant would benifit on my system with individual feeding.

My answer would be is I don't want the 60lt cow that cant get pregnant without requiring extra grain. Give me the cow that gives 60lt off grass and 6kg and still gets pregnant.

The slippery sloap i see with individual feeding is you end up favoriting the cows that require extra grain (your more expensive feed) over the cows that just get the job done.
