I would love to know what this rich food is, horse people go on about hay being too rich but when questioned they don't know what actually is. Is it energy? Protein or what?
Laminitis is generally an overload of starch. Which is why fattening cattle go off their feet with acidosis, same kind of thing.

Cows need more roughage to be contented, offer them more good straw, or even dried up thistles, and watch them choose what they want to eat, pot bellies produces nothing but aggro and foot problems, I notice no immediate comments regards calves and red string, don't know?, well ask your Vet, bet he does not know either, another point, cows should never be grunting when they are lying down, this is an expensive sign that they are eating too much of the wrong things, bye for now, thanks for all the nice comments! see you next week. The three cow guy.

I agree.
If I fed a diet of straw, thistles and string, problems with feet would be the last of my worries.

When are you going to enlighten us about your string theory? Oh hang on that's got to do with astrophysics and cosmology hasn't it? Or am I getting confused? :D

Not quite sure how cows chewing huge amounts of roughage to have happy cows is compatible with staying in business in the current climate in any case

Years ago I used to help an old fella along the road
He used to keep his suckler cows tied up in a byre
They were fed on hay with thistles and docks through it ,the cows never ate either the troughs would be full of dried up thistles and docks the next day
I also wonder how naturally rich a feral cow's diet would be in mid winter

Thank you Jimmer for your E-mail,how clever, i'm only a raw novice on my laptop, your quite correct .I said give your cows more roughage to help with long term foot problems, also dampen well all other feeds to keep their feet cool, most bulls I see for sale today, their feet are boiling hot, a complete disgrace, probably due to once or twice a week dumping of food in front of them, if buying always avoid even warm feet, thanks The three cow guy.

If only I could get away with feeding once or twice a week!
If I gave my cows thistles and string twice a week they would die.

Most calves will chew on string (plastic) because they know it does them good, why, why,? they know that there is Selenium used in the making of string, and calves know if they are short of this trace element, cows will also eat more than they need if this Trace Element is below par, cows also will only eat thistles if they are short of roughage, how would we like to live on soft pudding only,it is easy to test for T E's, your cows will tell you if you are short of Magnesium and Cobalt, if you know how to ask them nicely, there are 7 more of-course but you have to pay to get them tested, if you do, it is then Ta-TA to bad feet, trust me, it is not rocket science or whatever Dave Grohl called it, I suggest you have a little think, dont rush, it's a seasonal job to get your T E's to correct level,do it after that blessed THINK, the three Cow Man, Ta for now.

Indeed. Boredom is another reason.

Cattle have been shown scientifically to only express a self-regulating appetite for salt, no other mineral has been shown to be self-regulated by cattle. They will lick some minerals until they die. This has been known about for a long time, unless threecow can point us in the direction of some scientific evidence to back up his Se claims?

To dave grohl, tell me how does science know what cows think, please cut some newspaper into thin strips, tie these onto gates or fences and watch your animals eating them, tell me how you get on, or ask the cows why they do it ? The three cows guy.
