Feet - an alternative discussion

So first it was cows need wet feed.

Then calves need selenium

Then cows need thistles and straw

Cows eat paper

Bulls having hot feet

Then it's because soils are stuffed

Thrown all these ideas out like a scatter gun with no real explaination for any of them.

Feeding straw is hardly revolutionary either. I'm sure everyone here knows how important enough fiber is in a cows diet.

Its all about profit and avoiding bad feet, feed your cows properly with grass properly treated, plus enough fibre, you will not get bad feet anyway, ask your vet and tell me what he thinks it is, Clay 52 had 61 likes, but nobody yet has elaborated and said how to avoid bad feet altogether, seems to me nobody knows, or they are selfish and no good to anybody, or if we are all helping each other we'll start again next week, in the mean time collect a few empty Jam pots ready, then we can all work together sensibly. It's a combination of a lot of factors, there is no single way to avoid bad feet altogether.
I thought this was common knowledge?

You won't get anyone disagreeing about not wanting bad feet.

You are accusing everyone of not elaborating how to avoid bad feet but you are doing the exact same.

It's your thread. You have some alternative ideas on avoiding bad feet. Why not explain them.

Like he says, get your jam pots ready.
Im looking forward to the next instalment.
I'm looking forward to the punchline , I've spent half an hour of my life reading this thread
And I'll never get it back ;)
In all seriousness @thethreecowguy. I am genuinely interested in what you have to say ,but could you stick to clear and simple English please
I expect cows eat bits of newspaper to get lime from it ,to counteract acidic diets ?

To be fair I flip between thinking its daft and maybe he has a point.

I have my feeds analysed for mineral content, then this info and the ration are sent and a mineral recommendation made up. Then I quietly feed this mineral with the assumption I am doing a good job.
However short of doing a biopsy on a couple of cull cows I never actually look to do any testing on the rest.

We're all waiting for enlightenment from the guru. We've obv got to be patient as the revelations take time to ruminate. Prob from eating all those thistles...............
Cows need fibre? What's next? They need sleep?

Can't believe I'm still following this thread :woot::confused:

Sorry I overslept, not ever good to be in a hurry,no Lime in newspaper pals. but your animals know that there is Cobalt in it thats why they eat paper when they are short of same, this is similar to Copper and equally important, if short animals cannot make use of their bulk feeds, the answer for bad feet is in your soil, shall we do a test to see,we'll start by finding out how much humus our soil contains, fill your jam pots half full of soil chopped up from your silage fields, let it dry for a few days then we will go on from there if you think its worth it. As others have said you have some interesting views and valid points and i will do your jam pot experiment........but.......I get the feeling you have a hidden agenda.......maybe best to own up you are trying to sell us something? If I had to guess from your comments, you could be the "Better Grass" guy?? If you are not trying to sell anything, my apologies.

It's bull humus :D

At 82 years of age I am not trying to sell you anything,if you all think I am wasting your time think on, how much time are you going to waste on cattle with f----- up feet next year alone, how much profit is in that, dont tell me you dont know once again,so if you wish we will see to thosejamjars when your soilhas dried up a bit in them, The Three Cow Guy.

I haven't said you are waisting your time.

It would be nice if you could explain your theories. Why these things influence foot health? I'm willing to listen but don't have time to try an decifer vague statements.

I think most people on this forum like to learn and do things to the best possible standard so if you have a way of improving our cattle's feet above what we try to do already then please share so that the cows can benefit. We will have a mineral analysis of our forage back soon so if you can give me some pointers great if not can we finish with the wild goose chase as already said,
Thanks

Good man Durry cows, Let me know exactly what you are testing for (a full list please)most companies only do a part job that benefits them and not your cows, poor buggers,or your pocket, your cows will milk or fatten much better once you have got your Trace Elements bang to rights in your grass land, the T E's will then be correct in all your forage at all times, trust me, I will let you know what I think of your list. Simply adding T E's and/or minerals to improve your forage is an expensive way of doing it trust me, the saga re the plastic string and the newspaper confirmed to me what most farmers dont know, you can also test for Magnesium deficiencies without spending a penny hardly, but you will tell me that one surely to goodness. If not call me Uncle and I will see what I can do. The Three cow guy.

You wouldn't perhaps have some scientific research papers testing the link between trace element content in soils and that in plants would you? Especially as I would imagine that absorption is different in different plant species. It's an interesting theory but all seems a bit vague without evidence
