Fence Posts

Hello guys.

New member to the group. My name is Luke and I live in West Somerset. I have been fencing for 15 years and have come up with a new type of fence post. We will be reinforcing wooden posts with a GRP sleeve fully bonded to any size or shape post. The sleeve will prevent rotting and snapping at ground level. It is resistant to strimmer line and cannot be cut or broken unlike similar products on the market. Our posts can be driven in to the ground with post driver. I currently have a UK patent pending for the product and would really appreciate your views.

thanks Luke

So a bit similar to the sleeves that you can buy and apply with a heat gun? They have never really taken off.
Good luck with anything that will delay the rot.
Thanks for your reply Grassman. Similar but much much stronger material. Glass fibre matting fully bonded to the posts and cured with resin. We have dated evidence of posts being set in 10 years ago with absolutely no sign of decay at ground level. Our product will be launching in the next few months so keep an eye out.
thanks Luke

How about knocking some into stony ground then wait for 30 years, pull them out and let us know how well they did.
Speaking to farmers, some current posts aren’t even lasting 5-6 years. We have tested this post over a period of 10 years with no sign of decay at ground level. And we are sure it can deal with stony ground without the post being damaged. Keep an eye out for our posts launching in a couple of months time
Thanks Luke

Prolonging the life of timber fence posts can only be a good thing for the environment, less trees being cut down and made into new fence posts every 5/6 years 👍
Only at the price of burying thousands of fibre glass sleeves all over the countryside which I can only assume will never break down along with the plastics involved.
Interesting to see how they stack up against clip-ex.

posts also rot from the top, and struts rot too, so not wanting to be a downer on your idea, but I don't think it's a goer.

Thanks for your feedback. The overwhelming majority of posts rot and snap within 6 inches of ground level. The rest of the timber is still in pretty good condition by the time this occurs. At this point, there are 3 things that are needed for rot to thrive: moisture, oxygen and fungi. The GRP sleeve eliminates these 3 items from making contact with this section of post and also strengthens the post at this point. Posts can be further protected from the top using a grp post cap or a galvanised post cap. Struts can also be shielded with the grp wrap.
