Fencing for sheep

Getting a grant for fencing beside water course. Can either be five strands of barbed or three barbed and one of sheep wire. Will 5 strands of barb keep pregnant ewes or store lambs in. Want to rent ground in winter to thicken sward. Five strands of barbed cheaper than sheep wire.
I know nothing about sheep.

You need to dig the sheep wire in.
They will burrow under it

5 strands of barbed would probably be ok for in-lamb ewes but not for store lambs.
Go for sheep wire, put 2 strands of barbed above and 1 below to stop them from trying to push through below the sheep wire.

Definitley use some form of net ideally 8-80-22 or 8-80-30 not 8-80-15 like most people do, then plain wire on top so you can electrify it. Barb on top is a waste of time stock just rub on it, I always use barb as line wire below the net though to stop anything pushing underneath. There's no point skimping on a fence the cost is tiny when spread over its lifetime.

Yea
we rarely use barb at all these days , 2.5 ht instead
But what the op says it seems like the grant needs it to be barb,
.....because some 'expert ' always knows best.

Btw the barb needs to ht as well else it's even worse to work with, wont strain and is far heavier.

And If you keep it off the ground a bit it will help it cope with a shallow flood . Best to keep net up a bit anyway off the ground.

If you are saying 100 m of 8.80.30 is £60 then 500m should be £300
Arcelor mitall ( spelling) estate wire is what we use mv price atm is 63 for individual 100m before vat . That will fit nicely on clipex eco posts as well .
Can haggle on bulk buy not for that x knot stuff tho I doubt.

Winter doesn't usually need river fence here as the higher water is fence enough.

I wouldnt want 3 strands of barb and first thing we would do is put electric up against it as well

Infact river bank is better electric fenced as the floods dont harm it so terminally.

But the thing for the op is the grant and that's a bit different of an approach.
