Can you use creosote fence posts next to a footpath?
In process of getting things together for an improving public access footpath which I have been awarded Asked about creosote posts answer I got from Scottish Natural Heritage was that it wasn't an issue as nothing in rule book about it Regarding barb however any barb wire must be on field side of fence and guarded by a plain wire alongside it to the path side of fence. On a different note why do cows decide to calve at this time of night!

Love a good footpath it keeps us on our toes [emoji85] weve just taken on 65 acre with 7 footpaths running through it, the grounds never been fenced before and the dog walkers have always just walked and pleased themselves.... many arguments have happened in the last 3 weeks as they don't seem to like our electric fencing of all the footpaths [emoji85] everyone is exactly 1.2m wide and 2 strands of electric fence on the mains [emoji85] had the council out a few times because fluffy has had an electric shock [emoji85][emoji23]

The required width, as you say is 1.2 metres,so if you allow an extra 50mm on either side and make it 1.3 metres between the fences then Joe Dogwalker will be trespassing if poochie gets a shock [emoji41]

if the footpath is across the middle of a field is it not 1m in width? against a boundary wall and they are 1.5m wide?

bridleways are 2m across the middle of a field and 3m against a boundary wall unless this was obviously not the case years ago ie remnants of walls either side narrower

I think its daft but this is my understanding of the widths.
the pooch getting shocked, ive had a few similar sinarios but I thought the rules for dogs meant they had to be under control? just control them better then so they don't get shocked!!!

Rules are dog should be kept under control not necessarily on a lead but under control.... styles don't need to accommodate dogs as it is a FOOT path not a dog walking path.. 1.2m wide free from obstruction, barbwire must be on the outer edges of posts not the inner, electric fencing must be clearly identified

  • ■ Electri ed stock fencing used near to public rights of way will also require warning signs located at suitable intervals along its length – generally 50 to 100 m apart.
