Now I've just discovered this co who do creasoted posts, cundy peeled, 15 year guarantee. I'm out of the timber business so don't know their provenance but possibly worth a call;http://www.woodbanktimber.co.uk I believe they're near Ipswich. Nearer than Batsford Timber in the West.

Modern posts are generally shocking in quality . We have cleft oak posts still standing firm after 50 years and good chestnut will do 25 years. I now only buy chestnut stakes and use sleepers for strainers . Had a load of French oak sleepers about 20 years ago and they are superb although a trifle heavy.

I'm using half sawn sweet chestnut now. Look nice too. Hopefully will see me out. Only problem is some are too wide at the top for the hand rammer so either need cutting down or putting in with something else.

You should point the wide end of the stake , always stand timber the same way as it grew.

Came already pointed so not sure which way up they are. Seem to vary along the length.

This is what i need i think, the split (and therefore mostly bowed) ones are too prone to flexing and breaking. Sawn at least would be straight.

Sawn post is never as strong. Cleaving follows the grain so keeps the strength. I would agree though that when you get a real banana shape they are a pain to knock in
