Fencing questions

Undertaking some more fencing. Each time I do improve and looking to be better/easier this time too.
Using barb as bottom line (pigs).
When do I dig my strut hole and install the strut?
If the bottom line goes in first (after the two end strainers are in) then it's awkward to dig the hole. Should I rope a guide line for straightness to mark the holes, take it down dig in the struts and then install my bottom line?

I Don't quite understand why its in the way to dig the strut in. You just dig down along side the wire and if you've hard stapled to the side of the strainer you should have an inch or two extra space away from the wire.

Or are you referring to digging in a strut block which passes under the wire? If so place the strut block under the wire to give your self some extra room.

I cut mine, up against the strainer, 6'' nail in, and the other end on the ground, butting against a 7' post at ground level, then staple all the wires on the pig netting on the 7' post (3 staples on the pig netting on all the other posts)

Even if the wire is tight you should still be able to dig with it there.
More awkward yes but is certainly doable

I've just found it difficult in the past and wondered if there was a better way, thanks guys ☺️

Just install your straining posts and roll out a single strand of barbed wire. Attach one end of the wire to a straining post at ground level, by looping it around the post and wind it around itself, do not staple it on.

Strain up the wire just enough to make a straight line at ground level. Knock in your posts and then detach the wire from each straining post and fold it back enough to allow you to install the props. You can then fix on your strands of barb/ netting as required.

Ok yes I guess I wasn't thinking outside the box

Another question; I'm trying to source steel poles about 18 inches long to go on top of a wall with 2 or 3 smooth wires. They can bolt onto the wall or be mortared in. Anyone know of a supplier?

if you cant find anything suitable, how about the cutting the top off a clipex post? cut down to size and mortared in?
pasture posts have four clips but would be 23" for three holes evenly spaced, where as eco posts would fit three wires in 18". but somebody will know of a supplier I'm sure.

McVeigh have offered me extensions which clamp on top of standards to raise the height of a fence. They are .5M long and take 3 wires. I'll order them if no one else can help.

I've got on ok since starting this thread, managed to dig two holes next to barb and only cut myself once and another two hole just using rope to mark the position first...

also started betting a bit more fancy with my strut tops by doing chiselled mortises in the strainer
