Just wondering what the best type of staple gun there is for putting stock fence up with, I’ve seen some over £1000 some for less than £50.

Be careful! You're stepping right into a gang war among fencing contractors as to what stapler is the 'right' one to use.
I thought I was just posting a few pictures in the fencing pics thread and got my card marked for making an innocent comment about staplers. I think its the fencing version of 'Which pickup should I buy', or 'Which tractor brand is best?', passions run high!

Usually anyone who has already spent a lot of money on one will tell you anything cheaper is poorer. This applies to virtually everything in life

I've got the stockade ones @ around £500 for compressed air gun and circa £1k for the gas gun.
Are they good? yes, gas one is a little heavy, they put staples in well which I'm happy will last the life of the fence. Staples are pricy especially 50mm's as you have to buy the gas ones.
Are the cheaper versions any worse?, I don't know. The people that use they don't have any complaints . They are a lot cheaper to buy and staples are half the price. If I didn't already own the stockade I would seriously consider the other brands, which I think are the same gun under different stickers (tejep, Montana, senco).
I don't mind paying the initial out lay for the stockade but expensive staples to go through it wind me up when other makes are half the price.

Use paslode 1st fix nail gun quite a bit, seem pretty good, I believe they make a staple gun. I can't comment on that tho, never seen one

Is 50mm staple necessary? 40mm is biggest I use.

I use a bostitch gas nail gun which will do 90mm but it struggles to get them fully in.

Used to use all 40mm's but gone up to 50mm's now. Just for better holding especially on barb or single strand fences. No one has got time to knock the odd staple in if one has come out so why not try to stop them coming out to begin with.

I did a post and rail job recently and did it with screws instead of nails.
I was quite satisfied with it. I haven't costed the difference in price but working on my own it was certainly easier.

I find it depends a lot on the staples. Some 40mm have a good barb on them. Some don't have any.

With mine it depends on the brand of nails. One brand goes in perfectly. Another leaves 5 mm to finish by hammer.

John. i cant justify the stockade. everything more expensive than the tjep.
yes the tjep staples are a bit narrower but thats the only difference the gap to hold wire is the same and the length is the same.
ive never had an issue.
the thing that rankles me is stockade themselves and stockade owners totally dismissing the tjep. montana etc. as some mickey mouse tool. and most have never used it.
i would like to have seen who wouldve bought what if they were launched at the same time.
stockade were undoubtedly lucky that they had no competitor to go up against.
why not have a go of one John.

Best thing for knocking in staples, cheap and never fails and will knock a variety of different staples and nails.

If you'd ever used plastic fence posts you wouldn't say that! Trying to hammer staples into them is prone to lots of mashed fingers and copious swearing.....whereas a stapler does this as fast as you can pull the trigger:

You can get pneumatic ones, I have a Bostich one, requires at least 90psi to fire in the staples fully, and they're not as thick as normal farm ones, though about as long.
