bets place to get posts and/or wire from

taken on some land on a 3 year tenancy, I think I will get it again but don't want to spend over the odds ...

plan is to put 1 line of electric around existing walls (remnants of) and 2 lines where remnants of a hedge are (and rip the odd plant that's left out!)

at 10m centres which is what I have been doing electric at is 275 posts

3000m 7 strand electric galv wire
300 insulators to match

5ft 6 3-4" £1.80
£48/1000m 7 strand galv wire
£16/100 screw in ring insulators

I also have another project for pheasant pens

we want some 1" mesh about 8 25m rolls of 6ft

we were thinking of putting in 5ft6 posts and a lat to support mesh but at £2.85 are 8ft posts out? 3-4"
would be looking at like 90 posts for this project we were thinking 70 5ft6 and 20 8fts but easier all 8fts?

any tips/ advice?
I know the posts wont last 5 mins but I cant be affording to spend too much all at once my plan it to infill with better stuff as and when possibly even clippex?

Posts wise, could you get a ton or two of chip grade logs? Probably £30 - £40 a ton? Can't remember why but this idea crossed my mind a few days ago when I saw a lorry load passing... Should last 3 or 4 years.

Clipex would probably be in the running (and would be very long lasting). for a single or double strand pasture posts would be good enough.

Personally I would go with HT wire, even 1.6mm over 7 strand wire, as I don't think 7 strand would outlast your first tenancy and its horrible to work with.

I can put up a Clipex fence myself with hand tools including digging strainers at about 350m in a short day, costing about £1/m including electric tape gates.

+1 I've done a fair bit for one customer, but using 3 strands of 2.0mm ht plain, 7-8" 8' strainers and turners then Rappa steel posts at 12m centres, although clipex would be better imo.

Just write off the strainers and wire after and keep the posts.

Advantage of the cheaper clipex posts without the anti-lift tab is you can pull them out easily. They work out cheaper than temporary plastic posts (y)

Old telegraph poles for strainers work well, cheap(ish) and well treated, although crash barrier would potentially better. Cheapest option would probably be crappy strainers though. The metal ones are crazy money!

If you are a proper cheapskate (like me) you can roll up the wire and re-use quite easily.
