Fencing suppliers Northern Ireland

Have a wee bit of fencing to do for EFS (450m) and need to use posts with a minimum 15 year guarantee. Going to price around local suppliers (east Antrim) but just wondering if there are any other ones worth trying? Obviously want the cheapest but don’t want cheap rubbish either.

Balcas and Drenagh sawmills are the only two local manufacturers of the 15 year posts I can think off. You could go for the creoseted octagonal posts but they are more expensive.

We've been using octopost creosote strainers, McDowell's had 8 and 10fts the last time I was there.
We got 6ft long 85mm machined round posts with a 15yr guarantee from Greenmount country stores, although I think someone said Connon in Ballymena was slightly cheaper. If you need longer posts you'll likely have to travel, I ended up in Kirkwood's in Castlewellan for 7 and 8ft posts.

Rang Farm Relief fencing and they got a man from Connons to phone me, have got a good price from them for everything we need (y) wanted Rylock wire but turns out they are out of business so not sure how that affects the guarantee so will go for stockmaster wire, @Mouser @Boohoo have yous used it before?
We will be using 8ft Strainers afaik

Wouldn't worry to much about the wire, we prefer high tensile barbed, not nice to work with but makes a better fence long term. Mrt or dragon estate do green wire much the same as rylock. Nearly every one uses creo strainers now. There's some rotten fences round the country that only went up in last 10 years

aye we are goin to high tensile stuff (y) was talking to a farmer from millbrook and he was replacing a strainer that broke because it was rotten, 2 year old

We've been using rylock up to now, not that we do much. Plenty of people who put up more in a day than we do in a year and we're still learning. We've gone to high tensile now, some mild steel we put up earlier in the year seemed very soft.

Alright lads,

Do these posts come with an explicit written guarantee or just sold as 15 year life expectabcy?
Balcas and anything locally grown that is machined round will be Spruce and you're on a hiding to nothing with that. Check the terms of the guarantee too

Spruce is a nightmare to get preservative into. That's why they now machine round and incise it with all those indentations to help the chemical get in, I think the minimum depth allowed is 6mm :banghead:

Not sure about the creosote posts but a friend is using post saver posts and each bundle had a written guarantee on it. We would of preferred to use split posts but under the scheme we can’t

Like all guarantees the devil is in the detail. A lot of them are on a sliding scale, so say in 10 years you put in a claim they might give you a proportion of the money back or exchange posts.

But timber will have gone up plenty by then, and your labour costs will be far higher in 10 years.

If possible, top the grant money up with your own and go for decent Creosote. It's free money so might as well put it to the best use possible :)
