I hear a lot of good things about them, but how much life is left in a tractor of this amount of hours?

Would the worst case be replace the Vario but then have a good tractor from there?

I have a 09 with 8.5k hours and that was my thinking when I bought it.
I guess yours will need a new hitch if it’s still got the old type Bennet hitch as mine did.

Plenty to go wrong with them but I know people with near 20k hours on them and still running them. I think they can pressure test the gear box to see how efficient it still is, so that would be worth doing

All depends on how it's been driven and serviced since new...and the type of work it's been doing. Has the egr been blanked off as this I think was an issue after a few thousand hours....we have a 2010 718...had it since new.... 8500 hrs....just niggly things so far....just put a new rad on it.....not cheap. And a viscous fan unit.

Similarly Chandlers have an 11,500 hr Challenger advertised for £62,500!! You’d have to be bonkers to buy that. I don’t understand where some of these dealers get the used values from. It’s crazy.

Hard to know. There is a lot to go wrong, and electrics are not cheap. But Id budget for a vario at that age. Engine might need an overhaul too. I think its overall condition at that point will tell a great deal, and a service history. You could be lucky and nothing could fail for a long time, and you could be unlucky and be facing a host of problems.
the 820s were prone to overfueling and melting pistons if not caught in time. I guess that might be the case with any common rail? a pre common rail 818 would be better but getting rare now.
Quite a few say you might be better getting a fendt mechanic to have a look.

Perhaps best to ask yourself, why have they taken it all the way to 12000 hours then decided to get rid?
They were obviously not scared to run it out of warranty but something made them decide it was time to move on.
Doesn't mean it's going to blow up one week in but if it does it wont be the first.

I have never driven a Fendt , know nothing about transmission but at that hours previous owner has had best use from it and should be priced
a lot less
I would go as far saying if you do buy it before the end of the year you will wish you hadn't

For some reason if you look at SH Fendts more 820s are advertised with a new or recent vario than the 700s. Something to do with the power? At 12000hrs it will need or have had cab mountings, seat, brakes and cardan brakes looking at unless it’s lived on field work, most probably eaten a turbo and will have a fair few oil leaks underneath from hardened hoses etc

just depends on how it’s been looked after and serviced

if it has dealer history i would say it has many years left ahead of it - transmission can do 25k hrs without problem when looked after properly

if it’s had the occasional fluid change in a farm workshop with none OE fluids and parts i would run a mile !

certainly seem to be the range you hear most problems about yes

we had a short term hire 828 and that was the only Fendt we have ever experienced any significant unreliability with as well

its the 700 gearbox with more power, I suspect there is no 728 for a good reason ?

I think I myself got caught up in the belief that Fendts are bulletproof. The lesson I learnt was the vario costs. Would I pay £35k plus the vat for one with 12000 hours. I don't know. From a dealer with a years warranty on the vario, tractor being immaculate, well tyred, and full service history; but if not, Id minus 11k off that price for a replacement vario if no warranty.
