Fendt transmission rebuild cost 25k

Have looked at that, big cost to do it. I’m just weighing up options. A second tractor would be handy at times and the depreciation on a used one should be lower. If a breakdown were to occur, either tractor could take over.

It’s the reliability of a used tractor is the main concern I would have. I wouldn’t mind the odd repair but too much downtime would be a pain.

So you just need some big old powershift bus to lug a plough?

Looking at the spot price, that chicken feed seems cheap!
Grain lorry arrived the other week. Driver opened end door to sweep out. Previous load had been screenings - broken grains, chaff and loads of tiny little stones.

I said "where do you take that stuff, to a digester?"

"No, goes to a chicken feed company. That's all they ever take - screenings"

Absolutely full of stones it was. I couldn't believe it.

Just been talking to local farmer he said local contractor recently had Fendt transmission rebuilt at a cost of £25,000
He also said full artic load of chicken feed is £10,000
I believe chicken feed cost as someone was talking on radio a few days ago not so sure about fendt transmission

Some of the mainline dealers are sending the vario gearboxes to these guys who are repairing all makes including Fendt.

I can quite believe it cost that much to repair the transmission in the original post. A couple of years ago in the yellow peril in the what's in your shed bit a fellow was singing John Deeres praises on how they'd looked after him. A tractor packed up on him when it was just out of warranty, it needed a transmission rebuild and between the dealer and John Deere they met half the cost. Still cost him over £17,000.
Imagine the outrage if it had been another make and not a Fendt or John Deere!

What sort of chicken feed are they producing? They may be milling it right down to make chick crumb etc?

They do. I’ve spoken to them about this exact thing and I can tell you it’s no where near £25,000 quoted on here. No where near. A CNH cvt gearbox off them is just over £5k plus fitting.

Disappointed with some replies here, just done a search for fendt vario gearbox reliability and this thread popped up so question.
Are Fendt gearboxes reliable at 10k hours or are they a box of bits waiting for a 25k bank bail out?

I think it completely depends on how they were driven and maintained for the 10k hours.

We recently purchased a 8k hour 724 and when checked, the pressures & calibration all looked perfect. Not saying it won’t release a ball bearing in a bad place tomorrow.
We have a 2k hour 516 and I actually thought about it yesterday as I was driving that I’ve never actually used the stick to change speed (except for engaging cruise control). I just use pedal as I prefer it.

From what I hear, a vario is likely safe for at least 15k hours if minded.

Did your old contractor not sell 2 in his sale with 25,000 + hours on them for the pair still never been touched

That's true worked hard but also well cared for by careful operators. The big one had the engine problems of course. Thought they still made a big price for the hours that's why I'm asking, Add a 25k repair on top of the hammer price and its no bargain

Would be no were near 25k for new box fitted , more like 10 k , depending on it being a 500,700,800 or a 900

Assuming the engine needed an overhaul and the vario needed service exchange, what else could go wrong in the next 5000 hours? 4wd clutch and PTO clutch, plus hydraulic pump. How much for this little lot?

I’ve travelled to different parts of the world and try and look in at farms when I do

what has struck me we are fairly unique in our desire for new tractors. Take the US for example their machines are mainly 80s and 90s builds and they just keep them going. The cost per hr will be a fraction of what our tractors will be.

I never buy new, instead opting for something with around 1k hrs on the clock and end up parting with around 75% of the new cost. In normal times depreciation is steep in the first few years, but when they get to around 4K hours their overall cost per hr is less than half that of a year old machine. Properly maintained, looked after and sympathetically driven equipment goes a long way to keep breakdowns at bay.
