Fact is, if you are a tenant farmer or a Contract farmer looking for extra storage either in the long term or short then CS fits the bill quite well. There is clarity and a clear operational cost and no one has to fund a building that is potentially a liability if the tenancy were to end.
Many of the CS members run a yard full of tenants rather than fill old buildings with a cheap commodity like grain.

Or the contract farmer buys into CS at £110/t and then looses the contract farming customers and then can’t sell the tonnage in the CS. Better off having your own sheds to generate some income.

You don’t have to buy in, there are no options to use it for shorter terms as this has been raised by some of us

If you don’t buy your tonnage how can you use it then? I thought that was the whole point?
If you can just use it annually for £11/t I totally get it.
No it would be more than a handling charge at cost. Any commercial offering they do needs to make the members money, it’s a business after all! Local commercial stores are £9/10/t not including haulage.

If I was looking for short to medium term storage, the last thing I would do is buy into a CS. There is no guarantee of getting your money back. You can buy annual storage at competitive rates, or sell at harvest and buy futures.
I let out 19,800 sq ft of old grain stores to tenants BUT I replaced the space with new grain sheds and increased the value of my property. If I loose the need for grain storage then I have more space to let. Why don't CS members get this. FFS how many times do I have to repeat myself.
Each to their own. You throw money at Congrain, I'll invest in my farm.

Yes totally correct. If ajd had invested in sheds at the beginning of his contract farming business he’d now have increased the value of his property as sheds tend not to depreciate if they have industrial letting option. In fact they appreciate marginally.

I wasn’t born when the business started. Dad has 70 acres to start with and no yard so had to do something. I believe some second hand silos came and went at one point briefly, i remember dad nearly chopping his arm off on one when I was very young! They soon went.

Agreed.

Medium term home for added value grain like milling or malting - CS that has more demand for space than supply.

Short term home for feed grain - best to rent commercial storage.

Long term solution is to build your own on farm but needs twice the cash to buy in if you want handling and drying facilities as CS.

Do what suits your situation. There’s room in the market for all options and one size does not fit all.

What would you charge me for storing 1000 tonnes of feed wheat for 9 months then loading it out if I delivered it to your store dry at harvest @Jetemp ?

Wilts Grain quoted me £18.50/t about 5 years ago but that included £6 of haulage.

PM me if you prefer.

I agree compelling case for both, depends on many factors. Geography, markets you grow for, where you view processor relationships going in the future, how your business is structured etc.
Can’t see commercial storage as anything other than a short term fix, unless you run one!

what I dont get is why those who store their own grain get so upset at those that use CS, we do it because in our own circumstances it works
Because several on here suggest that we are stupid not to.
All this 'well those using CS rent out their unused grainstores and make £4 sq ft' and 'they increase the value of our milling wheat' and 'I can go combining at 32% and they dry it for free'....... as if those of us who don't use CS haven't thought about renting sheds, have problems with our milling wheat or want to go combining at silly moistures when the sun dries it for nothing.
Those that use CS, DD and trailed sprayers should get off their holier than thou pedestal. Although I do appreciate that, like the OH, they are always right.

Doesn't the title of this thread sum up the problem I see with it. "Storage available at discounted price", i.e. he can't sell it, or he wants to do someone a massive favour.

I don’t think anyone suggested anyone was stupid to have on farm storage, from what I can see people were just sharing their views on how CS works for them. I was defending a model of grain storage that we use, that people were spreading misinformation and slander about. You were the one calling it ‘congrain’.....why are you now getting bitter about no till and trailed sprayers?
