steerage hoe is for sowing on the flat, the op is sowing in drills,
so turnips in drills, after there through and not to big, scerfire them, and hoe by hand, then go through them with a Fergie spring tine cultivator a couple of times over the following weeks till big enough to smother the weeds,
with spuds, plant with Ferguson planter and fur them upright way,, the after a week run the drills down very lightly with some saddle harrows, then fur them back up, after there through and weeds growing again between the rows with Fergie cultivator again a fur back up,
then on a day when soil is very damp fur up for the last time

I also have a set of Fergie harrows as shown in the OP's photograph. Frankly, I can't see how they could be used for weeding a crop. How do you weed with the cultivator between the plants? Yeah, I was being a bit facetious posting the picture of a hand hoe but they do work and I've spent many long (unhappy) hours using them! You get into a rhythm, like turning swathes of hay with a hay fork, which I have also done.

The Fergie harrows are excellent for ripping up a small patch of arable ground and I have used mine for a bit of no-till. I ripped up some old grassland after Roundup, then used spiked chain harrows to knock the soil off the clods, finally burnt off the rubbish after a few nice drying days. Worked a treat as I don't have a plough. I now have a decent sward on a useful padock of about an acre that otherwise would have gone to waste.

Didn't most use a drill plough for "weeding" roots and spuds? And a ridge harrow?
