Fergie te20 diesel starter prob

Can anyone tell me what the brass button on the side of the gearbox is meant to do? I have a diesel te20 1957 I think, it has the starter on the gear lever but just seems to push a rod to press a button on the starter motor, it doesn't seem to have any electrical connections like the TVO models?? Someone said the brass button was an inhibitor but mine doesn't work!

Yes, seem to remember it was to stop hitting the starter, by mistake.
Must be worn as the brass would be soft.
Some of the others will know how to get it out of the box, for repair.

Ah, the brass button is very loose and wobbly. Can these be removed at all without splitting? So am I right in thinking you can just push the button on top of the starter to start? Thank you.

If you don't push the brass button the gear lever won't go into the start position, like lifting gear lever to get a car in reverse
correct , so u don't hit starter when the engines running , u have to push in brass then use gear leaver.
some have been hit in and need to be gentley freed out / lubed .

don't like the sound of pushing in the button on starter with a finger if was in gear .....................

Sorry just to clarify the button is more hanging out than stuck in, does this sound like it's a splitting job to sort? I can temporarily start it with the button but would like it to be repaired properly.

The switch above the starter that the rods push from the gear lever. If you disconnect the rod and push it forward it works perfectly but obviously it no longer has the in gear inhibitor function which I would like to retain if poss.

so can u start it with the g lever at the moment
I would have thought it would take a lot to push the bendix gear into mesh by hand ,and then press the button on top mate

Are you referring to the button on side of gearbox? Is it just seized?

Yes the brass button where your right heal would be. No the brass button is hanging out loose and does push back in but doesn't really do anything, sometimes when you engage the starter position using the gear lever it works and sometimes it doesn't. When you disconnect the rods and push them manually from the air cleaner area it works fine. I have only just got the tractor so don't know the history.

I wonder if it's a bit stiff and not going in far enough?
