Quick test is to turn it over without the fan/water pump belt tensioned/fitted, if it's compression related the water will still come out, if it's a blockage then without the pump running it should stay where it is. Obviously don't run for any length of time.

If you have tried all the suggestiuons on here, you will have taken more time than you would have used to lift the head! Take the head off and have a look, check the liners as well, and dont turn the engine with the head off, without clamping the liners down.
Also, have the rad flow tested, at the age it is, its almost certainly scaled up inside.

Not sure if it even needs the water pump as convection should sort the cooling out?
Consider a blocked rad, if you had a donor to stick on to test.

I wouldnt worry too much, my match ploughing tractor had a new thermostat that at best opened 1/16" and I ran it all season like this, in the end I was just slightly curious as the bottom water pipe never got warm so took the stat out and put it in some boiling water to see it barely open at all, very lucky it never locked up!

Thanks for all the replies from everyone, I will be heading over to dads again at the weekend. I have ordered a head gasket and I will be investigating a few of the other ideas as well I'll post my findings
